International exchange students still need homes for the school year

Are you interested in turning your home into an international home? Hosting an international student in your home gives your family the enriching opportunity to live with someone from another country. You share the American experience and learn about another culture at the same time. Students are coming from Brazil, Turkey, Germany, France, and China. There are fall semester and year-long opportunities available. The responsibilities of a host family include providing two meals per day and a place to sleep and study. The student can share a bedroomwith a same-gender child of similar age. The students speak English, have their own spending money (for lunch, extracurricular activities, clothing, etc) and their own health insurance. Deadline for placement in Wake County is July 31. If you are interested in hosting or have questions about the process, contact ASAP: Crystal Allis, Local Coordinator 919-788-0852 (office/home) 919-413-3652 (cell)

Students scheduled to arrive August 6th:
    Meet Miss Zhenhao Bao
    Meet Miss Chenchen Shen

Update July 27th from Ms. Allis:
I have students who are still waiting for placement for this coming school year and time is running out. Please forward this request to everyone you know in NC. You never know who may be willing to help. Send to your neighbors, church groups, co-workers, etc.

I hate to see any students be left behind. Please help these students live their dream of coming to America! We have many students that are still looking for home in the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill area. I have listed them below. The Wake County and Chapel Hill deadlines are July 31, which is Thursday. After that, none of these great students will be allowed to come to live out their dream. I have included their name and country. If anyone wants more info on a particular student contact cgallis@earthlink.net or call 919-788-0852

You or someone you know can commit for the entire year or you can commit to being a welcome family for 4 - 6 weeks while a permanent placement is found.
I have a total of 20 students coming this fall. The large majority are girls. I would love to try to even out my group by throwing in some more boys to the mix.
Priority is given to the top two students on this list as they are on assignment with me, which basically means I have promised to find them a placement.

  • Camilo - Brazil

  • Charles - France

  • These male students are still available and look like students I'd like to represent and they are still waiting on a spot.

Junior team finishes CCSL season with third straight win

The Junior Trojans win at Lee County tonight 7-4 for three wins in row and finish the Central Carolina Scholastic League season at 11-4-1. With a strong defense behind him Scotty McCreery has a big day on the mound, going 5 innings for the win. He also picks up his first hit of the summer and scores the winning run on a 6th inning steal of home. Robert Doak pitches the final two scoreless innings for the save.

Coach Pake and Coach Siemering thank all the parents, fans, and supporters for all their help in making this season the success it was for our boys. Also a special thanks to Ace Announcer Chris Edwards for his hard work in the press box and the best show in the CCSL!!

Congratulations to Senior Paige Dugal who has been named to the East team for the NC East-West All Star Soccer game. The game will be held Tuesday July 22, 2008 at UNC-Greensboro. Paige starred on Coach Connie Barnes' 2007 squad that tied the school record with 16 wins, set by their 2006 team. Both teams were NCHSSA 4A state qualifiers for the first time in GMHS history. In 20 games this seaon, Dugal, who has committed to NCSU, had 32 goals and 21 assists. Congratulations Paige for continuing the Garner Winning Tradition!!!

Paige follows her NCSU teammate Kaitlin Wescoe, a 2007 All-Star and 1992 alum Kasey Monroe who was the MVP of the first women's soccer match before heading to UNC. Other Trojan alums selected for the all-star competition were Jacob Wescoe in 2005 (UNC), men's soccer and Trey Grissom (Navy) and Colby Holloway (Elon) for football in 2007.

Norris single in the 9th wins it for Garner

Wil Norris RBI single with the bases loaded in the ninth scores CJ Schmitt for the 8-7 win over Clayton. The Junior Trojans (10-4-1) rally from behind four times for the extra inning win. Winning pitcher Alec Hulmes and Schmitt hit game tying home runs in the fifth and seventh innings as the Trojan pound out 13 hits on the afternoon. The game was played after Friday night's rainout under beautiful blue skies at Trojan Park. Norris starts the game and goes 7 innings before Hulmes takes over in relief. Clayton scratches first with three runs in the first aided by 3 Trojan errors. Garner takes the lead back 4-3 in their half on Schmitt's RBI double scoring Bret Bailey and Hulmes. Josh Randle's single chases the Comet starter without recording an out. Acquil Sanders singles to score Schmitt and Randle. In the Clayton third inning, another Garner boot allows two to score to re-take the lead 5-4. After Scott McCreery takes care of the Comets with all three put-outs in their half of the fifth, Hulmes lines a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall to knot the game again at 5-5. The Comets send the top of their batting order up the seventh and score one for a 6-5 lead. With two out and the Trojans down to their final swing, Schmitt crushes a homer to right field and send the game into extra frames. Hulmes takes over for Norris in the 8th. After Comets put two on, Schmitt guns down a runner attempting to steal 3rd on killing another Comet threat. Clayton gets back-to-back doubles in the ninth to take the lead again 7-6 after Josh Randle makes a terrific diving catch in left from his shortstop position. The Trojans face their third reliever in the ninth as Hulmes doubles off Joe Pridmore, followed by an intentional pass to Schmitt. Pridmore boots Randle's sacrifice attempt to load the bases slam full of Trojans. McCreery takes one off the helmet to drive in Hulmes and another tie. Norris delivers his game winning hit, right up the middle in front of a diving Comet centerfielder and after 2 hours and 22 minutes, the Trojans send their fans home happy! The Trojans are in action again Monday night in a make up game at Lee County, 5PM

    Hawley shuts out Cougars

The Junior team ends their three game winless streak behind Matt Hawley's complete game shutout as the Trojans win 11-0 at Apex. The Trojans (9-4-1) return to Trojan Park Friday night for a 5PM game vs Clayton.

    Senior team nipped at RPS
Chris Edwards reporting: The Trojans hit the road for one of their final three games in the CCSL this summer as they traveled to Wake Christian Academy to take on Raleigh Private Schools. Garner came into the game needing to win two of their final three games to make the playoffs. Garner found themselves down early as Drew Gay gave up a home run to Forest Brandt which gave RPS a 1-0 lead.

The Trojans rally to tie the game in their half of the second when Jonathan Sherron RBI double to left plating Ricky Martin, but the tie would be short lived as RPS scored again in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. In the fourth inning, Garner knotted the game again as Clint Clay singled to right and later scored on a Phillip Myrick single to center.

A defensive miscue cost the Trojans in the fifth as Michael Ehilejbu singled to center, but the ball got past Phillip Myrick allowing Ehilejbu to make it to third he would score when the next hitter, William Brewer singled past the outstretched arm of Jackson Pleasant at third. With the RPS leading by one, they looked for more but the Trojan defense came through in the fifth inning as relief pitcher Bryan Woodard came in to strike out two batters with the bases loaded and keep it at a one run game.

Down a run in their final at bat, Myrick led off the seventh reaching on an error and moving to second with no one out. But, on a ball that got past the catcher, Myrick digged for third but was thrown out. After a ground out, Matt Powell singled and Jackson Pleasant reached on an error to put some pressure on RPS, but it was not to be as a ground out to ended the game.
Drew Gay became the tough luck loser for the Trojans despite scattering just six hits in 5 1/3 innings

Trojan football scrimmages at Harnett Central
The 2008 Trojans hit the field for 7 on 7 scrimmage tonight. Joining the Trojans at H. Central were the home team, Purnell Swett and Scotland County. The Trojans lined up again Central in the first session, with QB B.G. Howell looking efficient, completing four and five in a row to Ian Hunter and Jeremy Conyers. Patrick Monahan and Terrell Sanders have interceptions for the Trojan defense in the controlled action. Swett and Scotland County were a little less controlled as their series was cut short when a skirmish broke out. In the second session, Trojans faced Scotland County and generally showed the ability to move the ball well.

Trojans rally to nip the Mustangs in slugfest

Dillon Creech hustles home on a wild pitch with two out in the seventh for the 10-9 win over Middle Creek. The Trojans (6-3) erase a 7-0 deficit, pounding out 14 hits in the home CCSL win. Hunter Brown's 3-run homer is the big blow in the 2nd inning as Garner sends 12 batters to the plate and scores seven after two outs. Philip Myrick picks up the win in relief for the 6-3 Trojans. Middle Creek scores two in the first off starter Jackson Pleasant, with 3 hits and a Trojan miscue for a 2-0 lead. In their second, two doubles, a single, a Trojan error and two walks brings in Drew Gay with the Trojans down 5-0 and the bases loaded full of Mustangs. They push across 2 more to end the inning up 7-0. The Trojans explode in their half of the second, sending 12 batters to the plate. Matt Powell singles with two down, steals 2nd and reaches third on a wild pitch. Paco Martin drives him in, followed by a Myrick single to put runners at the corners. Creech is hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Gabe Chrismon 2-RBI single followed by Pat Monahan's RBI single makes it 7-4. Brown creases an 0-1 pitch to deep left for a home run, scoring Chrismon and Monahan and just like that its 7-7 after two innings. The Trojans inch ahead in the 3rd on Chrismon RBI single scoring Paco Martin for an 8-7 Garner lead. The theme of the VERY long evening (total game time of 2 hours and 35 minutes) continues when the Mustangs respnd with two in the fourth, loading the bases on three consecutive singles and plating a run on a sacrifice fly. Another Trojan error (four on the night for both teams) allows Middle Creek a 9-8 lead. Garner answers AGAIN with Powell driving in Andy Beck, courtesy running for Brown who reached on a walk and its knotted at 9 all after four. Creech lines a double in the 5th to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Nick Schavone relieves Jordan Keen for Middle Creek and the rally ends with a very, very close play at first with Monahan called out. The Mustangs get a lead-off single in the 6th. Myrick relieves Gay, who compiled 3.1 innings allowing just one earned run and holding the Mustangs close. After a walk, a terrific double-play, caught stealing erases the runners and Myrick stikes out the final batter of the inning. The Trojans have a chance in their half, when Brown leads off with a double but is erased on Jeremy Conyers ground out. Conyers reaches second on a passed ball and third on Ricky Martin's single, again runners at the corners. Powell's smash to third sends Conyers home but the umpire rules him out on the throw to the plate despite the catcher dropping the ball for not sliding, resulting in Conyers' ejection. Coach Goffena makes an attempt to explain the ruling to the ump to no avail and we head to the 7th still tied 9-9. The Mustangs send the top of their order up in the seventh and Myrick strands their only runner at second. Creech leads off the 7th reaching on a Mustang error, takes second on a wild pitch and steals third. After Brown is intentionally passed with two down, Creech dashes home on the Mustang wild pitch and this one belongs to the Trojans! The teams combined for 28 hits, 8 errors and 16 runners left on base and nearly a complete use of Chris Edwards' music library! The Trojans travel to W.Harnett tomorrow night with the Junior team leading off at 5PM, followed by the Senior team at 7PM:

Junior team stops Mustang rally for 7-5 win
Seth Council goes 3-4 with a double and Brett Walters drives in two to back Wil Norris, who goes 6 strong innings before the Mustangs threated in the seventh. The Trojans lash out 12 hits to go to 8-2 on the season in the home win. Norris stymies the Creek, shutting them out for six innings before he is touched for 5 unearned runs in the seventh. He gives way to Matt Hawley for the final out and the save. The Trojans strike in the first when Council doubles to lead off, followed by Colin Perry's perfect bunt for an infield single. The Mustangs misplay Walters smash to 2nd and Council scores for a 1-0 Trojan lead. Connor Torruella and Council lead off the 3rd with consecutive singles and Perry draws a 4-pitch walk to load the bases. Torruella hustles home on a Mustang wild pitch and Walters drives in two with the RBI single and scores on CJ Schmitt's RBI single and a 5-0 Trojan lead. Two more in the 4th for Garner when Torruella and Council go back-to-back singles again, and Torruellas hustles to 3rd and both score on consecutive Mustand wild pitches for a 7-0 lead. In the Mustang sixth, Brett Bailey kills another threat with his 5th consecutive base runner thrown out at home (also one caught stealing in the first inning). The Mustangs break the ice in the seventh, aided by 3 Trojan errors and two walks to send 12 to the plate and score 5 unearned runs but the rally ends with Hawley nailing down the 7-5 win:

  • Comets top Trojans in CCSL action

Jacob Baker comes up on the short end of the pitchers duel at Clayton as the Trojans fall 4-2. Baker goes 5 2/3 innings with 6 strikeouts but the Trojans can only manage three hits to support him. A Trojan error in the fourth leads to three unearned runs. The Comets score on a lead off walk, followed by an outfield error and a double, scoring two. Jeremy Conyers makes a terrific diving catch in right field but two wild pitches plates the runner for a 3-0 Comet lead. The Trojans get two runners on in each of the two innings but fail to score. Dillon Creech extends his hitting streak to 8 games with a lead off single in the first and Paco Martin doubles in the second but that's all the Trojan hitting through six innings. Trailing 4-0 in the seventh, Martin collects his second hit and Jackson Pleasant reaches on a misplay by Clayton. Creech singles to load the bases and Gabe Chrismon draws a walk to score Martin. Conyers RBI single scores Philip Myrick, running for Pleasant but the Trojans leave the bases loaded to fall to 5-3 on the season.
