Trojan defense is "spook-tacular" in win over the Warriors

LIVE webcast provided by the services of EZ Stream.com

The Trojans spend Halloween in Wendell, making life tough on E.Wake in the 24-12 win. Trojan QB BG Howell is injured and Cody Woodall fills in well, directing the Garner offense to three scores. Howell suffers a hand injury on the Trojans second series, the extent is not known. Michael Brantley rushes for 94 yards and two scores for Garner. The Trojan defense is the star of the night holding the Warriors to just two first downs in each half and allowing just one offensive score.

Garner scores first driving 56 yards to the E.Wake ten but Howell is sacked for an 11-yard loss on second down, which is the play he was injured. After an incompletion, Howell converts a 38 yard field goal for a 3-0 Garner lead. A big Gus Goodson return of the kickoff, starts the Warriors at the own 44. They advance the ball to the Garner 40 but consecutive incompletions, the last caused by pressure from Chaz Damon brings up an unusual field goal "attempt". Richard Gilliespie kicks the ball out of bounds at the Garner eight instead. With Woodall under center, the Trojans move it the 25 with Jeremy Conyers picking up six and Brantley just short of four. Woodall and the offensive line convert fourth and inches with the pile moving to seven yards. But the drive stalls, losing eight yards and forcing a Trojan punt. Ronald Moore subs for the injured Howell and his kick is blocked and Khari Jenkins takes it in for the score. The PAT is blocked to leave the score at 6-3 Warriors.

Ian Hunter picks a fumble on the Warrior kick and dashes to the Garner 30 yard line. After Brantley rumbles 5 yards, Woodall hits Brandon Byars on a slant pattern for 36 yards. Brantley runs it down to the Warrior 17. Conyers moves it to the 14, followed by Brantley's 9 yard gain. The Warriors are tipped by the backfield motion on first and goal, dropping Conyers for a six yard loss. But Woodall hits Brantley from 11 yards out on second and eleven and Howell's kick puts the Trojans back up 10-6. Goodson makes another terrific return to the E.Wake 45, but the Trojans hold them without a first down (again) with Aston Anglin-Stone pressuring Greg Jones on third down to throw it away. Terrell Sanders blocks the Warrior punt and the Trojans take over on the E.Wake 41.

Woodall misses high on his first down throw. Hunter follows with six yards on a reverse and Conyers adds 8 for the first down at the Warrior 27. Conyers stretches for two and Brantley makes a fantastic shoe string catch for four. The Warriors strangely call consecutive timeouts before Woodall hits Josh Brooks from 22 yards for his only catch of the game and the touchdown with 0:56 to go in the half. Thorton Watson prevent Goodson from a big return this time, nailing him at the Warrior 31. The half ends with Damon picking up his second sack of the game, dropping Jones for a five yard loss and a 17-6 Trojan lead. The Trojans enjoy a big 182 to 58 total yardage advantage for the period.

The Warriors start the second half on their own 30 after Garner incurs a face mask call, their first penalty of the game. Goodson dashes 12 yards but Connor McLaurin sacks Jones and then drops Travis Pate for a two yard loss. Goodson fails to convert the third and 14. From their own 11. Garner can't advance beyond the 27 and punt back to E.Wake. Damon's third sack of the night effectively kills the drive but the Trojans fumble when they get it back and the short field allows E.Wake offense their only score, covering the 38 yards in 5 plays with Jones diving in from 2 yards out. The two point attempt fails for a 17-12 score in the third quarter.

Conyers picks up 20 yards on three carries as the quarter ends. McLaurin rumbles 17 yards on his only carry of the night to pick up a key first down. Coyers and Brantley alternate carries for just short of the first down and Conyers gets an awful spot on third and one. The Trojans fumble and the Warriors take over on the 37. Again, the vaunted Trojan defense will have none of any comeback as Damon and McLaurin stop Jones on 4th and inches to get the ball back. The Trojans eat alot of clock but do not produce any points and the Warriors have another shot from their own 31. The Trojans allow just 9 yards and take back over at the Warrior 39 with 2:03 to go. No repeat of Monday night, as Brantley dashes the distance on second down and after a cheap shot by Montrelle Townes well after Brantley scores, tensions heat up but the officials rule offsetting after his Trojan teammates come to Brantley's defense. Howell's kick posts the final score of 24-12. Ronald Moore picks off Jones on fourth and 27 and send the Trojans off to enjoy the remainder of the Halloween evening.

Civitan Cheer squads need your help

The Garner Civitan Junior Midget and Junior Pee Wee Cheerleaders have qualified for the regional championships in Charlotte again this year. The teams won their local competition to move on to the next step toward qualifying again for the National Championships at Disney World! The teams are seeking sponsors to forego a portion of their travel expenses.

A t-shirt will be created with each sponsor's name and/or business recognized on the back. Additionally, sponsors tax deductible contributions will be acknowledged in the local papers. This a fantastic opportunity for these young future Trojans. Some of them come to cheer for the first time and the confidence they gain in themselves is tremendous. If you or your business is interested in helping to sponsor the teams, please contact Coach Gayle Barger or call 779-6420 or Coach Jeralynn Castles 779-5297. The teams thank you for your consideration!!

JV Trojans shutout the Warriors, remain unbeaten

Juwan Moye piles up 225 yards with two scores and Demetrius Fairley adds 138 yards and a score in the 20-0 win over E.Wake. Moye dashes 78 yards on the first play from scrimmage to put the Trojans up 6-0 just 22 seconds into the game. But the Warriors keep the Trojans off the board again until 2:31 to go in the half despite Garner piling up 244 yards of total offense. The Warriors manage only 42 yards for the first half.

After Moye's scamper, the Warriors fumble the ensuing kick, recoverd by Joshua Bullock at the E.Wake 16. But fail to pick up a first down and the field goal attempt fails when the snap is high and Kyle Wiggins completion to Edwin Jackson is not enough to move the chains. The Warriors take back over at their own 7. The teams trade possessions with the Warriors taking back over at their 23. After an 8-yard pass, a Warrior fumble is recovered by Malik Knight. The Trojans effectively move the ball 56 yards in 6 plays with Fairley and Moye alternating carries but the drive ends on fourth and 3 when Moye can manage only two yards. E.Wake converts a 36 yard pass. But just 7-yards more and punt to the Garner 23. Another Garner drive ends with a failed 4th down conversion. Nine consecutive rushes takes the ball down to the Warrior 8, where Fairley bulls up the middle for an apparent score, but a Garner holding call, only the second Trojan penalty of the half, brings up 3rd and 11. Dwight Darity hits Seth Council for 6 yards but Darity is dropped for a six yard loss on fourth down. However, Daniel Alston picks off the Warrior QB on first down and takes it back to the 12. Fairley takes it in from six yards out but picks up a personal foul call on the score. The PAT from 18 yards out is missed and the Trojans go into the half up 13-0.

Shaquille Nuridden ends the Warrior first drive of the second half with an interception at the Trojan 20 but can only manage a 12-yard Moye run before setting up to punt. The snap forces Andre Gillispie to run with it and the Warrior defense drops him for a 5 yard loss at the Trojan 25. The Garner defense stiffens and a Warrior holding call forces them back to the 41. An incompletion on fourth down gives Garner the ball back at the 23. Fairley sweeps left for 25 yards and Moye 3 into Warrior territory. Darity hits Jackson for 23 yards over the middle. After Moye runs it down to the E.Wake ten yard line, a Garner holding call followed by an offense pass interference call puts the Trojans facing 3rd and 40 for the first and the drive ends with an Andre Gilliespie punt. E.Wake picks up a first down, their first of the half but nothing more. After the punt, the Trojans put together a 65 yard, 5 play drive with Moye scoring from 4 yards out and Connor Torruella's kick ends the scoring at 20-0.

The Trojan defense is stout allowing just 4 first downs and get a fumble recovery from Gillispie and an interception from DeAnthony Harris down the stretch to preserve the shutout. The Trojans go to 9-0 and look to complete their undefeated season next Thursday at Holly Springs.

Trojans fall to the Bulldogs in GNRC action

LIVE WEBCAST, provided by EZ Stream Web Services
Play-by-play action brought to you by Jonathon Rand ('05) and Jimmy Kelly ('79)!
The game was broadcast by Time Warner Cable for replay on Channel 1234. Paul Doherty and Larry Junkin bring you the action.

SE Raleigh escapes with the win on Dominque Jones 76-yard interception return for the winning score with 2:01 to play. The loss drops the Trojans (5-4, 3-2 in the GNRC) effectively out of the conference title for the first time in 5 years. In control with a 34-28 advantage deep in Bulldog territory, the Trojans elect to pass allowing Jones the opportunity for the winning score. The loss negates a stellar knight by fullback Michael Brantley who piles up 127 yards and two rushing touchdowns. The Bulldogs top the Trojans for the first time ever in a regular season game.

The game was rescheduled from Friday due to substantial rain in the Triangle area and played on a very cold October night, with temperatures high 30's. Perhaps a factor as the Trojans fumble their first two kick offs but are able to recovery each, but deep in their own side of the field. Winning the toss, Garner takes the ball first, effectively driving to the Bulldog 24. The 7 play drive is highlighted by BG Howell's 3-3 passing for 53 yards, spreading the catches to Ian Hunter, Josh Brooks and Jeremy Conyers. But the drive stalls and Howell's 34 yard field goal attempt is just wide. SE Raleigh takes over on their 20, with Kevin Howell dashing 35 yards after a Gabe Henderson incompletion. After a 5 yard procedure call against the Bulldogs, Henderson hits Terrance Branch from 35 yards, who fumbles it into the end zone and recovers for the score. Robbie Holliday's PAT kick makes it 7-0.

The teams trade possessions and the Trojans third series ends with a lost fumble at the SE Raleigh 20. After Kevin Howell picks up three for the Dogs, Terrance Branch, on a reverse, hits Keith Tucker for a 16 yard score and a 14-0 lead with 2:54 to go in the quarter. The Bulldogs keep the momentum through the end of the quarter with Garner losing four yards on their possesion and set to punt. BG Howell booms a 55-yard punt to reverse the poor field position, and the Bulldogs start on their own 30. The Bulldogs move it out to the Garner 41 on consecutive running plays before Connor McLaurin and Chaz Damon converge at Howell for a 3 yard loss. After Henderson hits Jamar Sattererwhite for no gain, Damon recovers a Henderson fumble to give the Trojans the ball at their own 42.

Howell hits Conyers for a two yard gain and a Bulldog late hit moves the ball into SE Raleigh territory. Howell hits Brandon Byars over the middle for a 26 yard slant pattern to the Bulldog 15 yard line. The drive is in jeopardy after a Garner holding call and an incompletion, Brantley picks up 3 yards, setting up 3rd and 20. But Howell catches a streaking Brooks from 26-yards out for the score and the lead is cut to 14-7. Heath Mallette returns the ensuring kick 69 yards but a Bulldog holding call brings the play back. A Garner dead ball personal foul on the same play, starts the Bulldog drive on the Garner 35. Ronald Moore makes a great defensive play on the first down pass and Jonathon Stevenson bats away Henderson's second down attempt. On third and 10 Henderson hits Satterwhite for 14 but he fumbles and Pat Monahan recovers for the Trojans on the 20.

Brantley takes over taking a Howell flair pass 28 yards and follows with a bruising 11 yard run to the SE 19. Garner calls a reverse pass of their own, but Brooks misses Hunter deep. Conyers drives it down to the 9, where Howell hits Brooks again for the score and adds the PAT for a 14-14 tie with 3:24 to go in the half. The Bulldogs answer with a score of their own, driving 72 yards as the half ends, with Terrance Walker picking up 52 yards rushing. Howell dives it in from 2 yards out with 21 seconds to go and the Bulldogs go in at the half up 21-14.

The Bulldogs fumble the kick as the second half opens, with James Skillern getting the recovery at the SE Raleigh 30. The drive it in from there with Conyers getting the 3 yard score just over two minutes in and knotting the game again at 21. The Trojan defense forces a Bulldog punt but the second Trojan fumble on the kick puts the Bulldogs in business at the Garner 25. But another effective stand allows but 4 yards and Holliday's 31 yard attempt is wide and the score stays tied. After the Trojans fail to gain a first down, Ronald Moore picks off Henderson's first down attempt at the 44. Howell passes to Brooks who make an fantastic twisting grab but is ruled out of bounds. But a Byars 3 yard reception and Brantley 8 yard dash keeps the drive alive. Conyers picks up 5 and Hunter six on a Howell screen. From the 24, Brantley explodes right up the middle for paydirt and the Trojans first lead of the night 28-21.

McLaurin who played inspired defense all evening, drops Satterwhite for big loss on a backward pass and the Bulldogs punt just 28 yards, allowing the Trojans to start at the Bulldog 32. The critical possession hinges on a McLaurin 2 yard run on third and three, but Garner is called for TWO personal fouls and the short yardage becomes third and 31 as the third quarter ends. Remarkably its the Trojans first (two) penalty of the half. But the Trojan defense cover the punt at the fifteen. Howell is dropped for a six yard loss by Cordero Hunter with substantial pursuit by Damon and McLaurin. After a Henderson incompletion, McLaurins breaks through for a sack, which Jonathon Stevenson covers at the Bulldog six. Brantley dives in 39 seconds later for a 34-21 Garner lead. Again the Bulldogs answer. Henderson's shuffle pass is taken 15 yards by Howell and then he hits Tucker for 17 yards to the Garner 45. Satterwhite drops a wide open pass before Kendall Moore picks up two and Henderson misses on third down. The Bulldogs fleeting hopes are revived with a pass interference call on fourth and 7. The ball is moved to the Trojan 29. On a Kevin Howell 11-yard run, the Trojans are hit with another personal foul, their 4th of the half. From the six, Henderson scrambles in to cut the lead to 34-28 with 7:10 to go in the game.

Jeremiah Davis returns the kick to the 19 and the Trojans go on a methodical 9-play drive, all runs by6 Brantley and Conyers, driving to the SE 18, with just 2:07 to go. Inexplicably, the Trojans go for the pass and Jones grabs the ball as Howell is hit and rambles 76 yards for the tying score and Holliday converts the winning PAT. A coaches decision that is certain to be questioned for years to come.

Despite Hunter's 29 yard return to the 43, the Trojans final drive ends with them losing 4 yards, while the SE band plays throughout the entire series. The Bulldogs benefit from conference opponent W.Johnston's first loss of the year to set up a showdown with the Wildcats for the conference title later this season. The Trojans stretch of 8 titles in 9 years ends.

JV Trojans survive the turnovers to down SE Raleigh

Demetrius Fairley piles up 164 yards and four touchdowns and Juwan Moye adds 163 but the Trojans turn the ball over 4 times to the Bulldogs but survive a 42-36 win and stay unbeaten at 8-0. Four fumbles (three lost) and interception uncharacteristic of the Trojans allows SE Raleigh to keep it close. A huge JaRod McAllister sack with 1:03 to go seals the win and sweet revenge from last year's lost at SE Raleigh when the Bulldogs used several varsity players to end the Trojans 33 game win streak.

The fumble bug hits the Trojan on their first possession and the Bulldogs used the short field to score first. Taking over at the Garner 42, the Bulldogs drive to the Trojan 10, where Dominque Jackson hits Tristan Walker for the score and Rashard Holt adds the two point conversion for a 8-0 lead. The Bulldogs recover the ensuing kick at the Garner 27, but Gavin Wilson levels Walker for a loss of nine on a flair pass, followed by an interception by Shaquille Nurriden to give Garner the ball back.

From their own 11, Fairley rambles 46 yards off tackle and Moye add 14 to the Bulldog 28 yard line. After Fairley sweeps for 4, Moye takes it the distance and Fairley adds the conversion to knot the game at 8-8. The Bulldogs start at their own 37 for the next series when Jackson fumbles, recovered by Matthew Vasquez, but a phantom face mask negates the call and SE Raleigh retains possession, until Bryan Watkins grabs the Trojans second pick of the night at the Bulldog 40. On first down, Fairley takes it to the house and a 14-8 Garner advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The Bulldogs answer with a 10-play, 71 yard drive to tie things up again, with CJ Okwara scoring from 2 yards out. The Trojans third fumble gives SE Raleigh the ball at the Garner 11 when incredibly for the second time, a Bulldog fumble is reversed for a Garner face mask. Jackson dives in from 2 yards out and Charles Little is wide open on the two point conversion for a 22-14 SE lead. Garner's fourth turnover, of the half, an interception, ends their next series at the SE Raleigh one yard line. But the Bulldogs fail to capitalize and punts. The Trojans fumble the punt but are able to recover at the SE Raleigh 40 with 3:29 to go in the half. Fairley picks up three and after a Bulldog offside call, Moye picks up 12 and the first down. A Garner holding call and a four loss on a reverse, brings up 3rd and 15. Dwight Darity scrambles for 13 and Moye picks up the first down with a five yard run and a SE Raleigh face mask moves it their 19. Fairley rumbles it in to knot things again at 22 at the half.

The Bulldogs strike quick on their first possession of the second half when E. Smalls takes Jackson's pass 59 yards for the score and Jabori Balogun adds the 2 point run for a 30-22 lead. Seth Council fair catches the pooch kick at the Garner 45 and Moyes dashes 18 yards on first down. SE Raleigh tacks on 15 more with a personal foul for hitting Moye out of bounds. After Fairley and Moye exchanges runs for 3 yards, Fairley dashes for his third score of the evening and adds the two point try for another tie at 30-30. Daniel Alston kills the next Bulldog drive with the Trojans third interception and returns it to the SE Raleigh 28. With Moye piling up 27 yards, Fairley dives for his fourth touchdown from a yard out to put Garner up 36-30, where it stays until the end of the third period.

The teams trade two serieses without first downs and Trojans take over at the SE Raleigh 49 with 11:26 to go. Juwan Moye needs just one carry to take it in for the score and give Garner a 42-30 lead. Garner offers a squib kick of their own and the Bulldogs take over at their 43. Okwara dashes the final 38 yards for his second score of the night to cut it to 42-36. The Trojans fail on 4th down on the next series and the Bulldogs have a final chance, taking over with 6:23 to go on their 33. Chewing up 5:20 off the clock, they are able to move it the Trojan 43 before incurring a personal foul taunting call and backed up to their own 42. Gavin Wilson sacks Jackson for a 5 yard loss. After Balogun runs it back to the Trojans 37 before McAllister makes consecutive sacks of Jackson for combined losses of 13 yards on third and fourth down to end the threat and send the Trojans to 8 wins without a loss.

Trojan soccer celebrates Senior Night win

The Trojans continue to stay hot with the 5-3 win over SSS to close out the regular season. Garner, winners of 7 of their last eight matches, clinch 3rd place in the GNRC and qualify for the 2008 NCHSSA play-offs. The night includes a halftime recognition of the Senior athletes from the Class of 2009. The game was rescheduled from Sept. 16th due to a weather cancellation.

The Trojans (9-8) start fast with two quick shots in the first two minutes but its SSS tallies with two goals to put the Trojans down 2-0 at 7:55. Dave Mbula's goal is disallowed for an offside call at 9:38 and Dillon Creech makes two great blocks at 13:43 and 14:15 to keep things close. Matt Wescoe's blast careems off the cross bar as the Trojans apply pressure throughout the half. Senior goalie Drew Gay makes a fantastic save at 15:21. Wescoe breaks the ice at 16:31 on a penalty kick cut the margin to 2-1. The Trojans out-shoot the Spartans 16-7 in the period. Mbula shot deflects off the post and Luke Tompkins is just high on their shots before Wescoe registers his second goal at 29:22, assisted by Mbula. Connor Torruella blasts it from 21 yards out to put the Trojans ahead, assisted by Wescoe and Cliff Smith as the Trojans jump on top. Hector Kunichek is just wide as the half ends with Garner up 3-2.

Seniors honored during halftime festivities, accompanied by their parents:
Captain Gabe Chrismon, Dillon Creech, Drew Gay, Jake Smith, and Luke Tompkins.

Garner continues to apply the pressure in the second half and the stellar defense allows just three shots on goal for SSS. Torruella scores his second of the night on a rebound for a 4-2 Trojan lead, three minutes into the half. Cliff Smith makes it 5-2 at 16:04 on a terrific assist from Tompkins. The Spartan end the scoring at 17:20 and Senior Captain Gabe Chrismon stops a near point blank SSS shot with three minutes to keep it a 2 goal win for the Trojans.

JV Trojans run their record to 7-0, down the Comets

Juwan Moye piles up 198 yards rushing and touchdown runs of 68 and 41 yards and the Trojans defense shuts out the Comets in the second half in the 33-7 win. The make up game was played during the scheduled off week after a previous rain-out.

Davonte Atkinson returns the opening kick 18 yards to the 25. Moyes sweeps 7 yards and on second down breaks free and rambles 68 yards for the score just over a minute into the game. The disasterous first Comet series loses two yards and ends with a 3 yard punt which hits a defender and Garner has it first down on the Clayton 25. But a second down interception gives the ball back to the Comets. But briefly, as Bryan Watkins recovers a Comet fumble at the 36. The 8 play drive features Moye for 4 rushes for 25 yards and Edwin Jackson caps it with a 3 yard touchdown reception from Dwight Darity. Another 2-point attempt fails for a 12-0 Garner lead.

Daniel Alston snuffs out a Cole Turner reverse for a 3 yard loss and Cameron Redd pressures the Clayton QB for an incompletion of 3rd down to keep the Comets without a first down as the first quarter ends. The Trojans fail to pick up a first down on their ensuing possession and the Comets take over deep in their own territory. Clayton QB Matt Reid picks up the first down on 4th and 1 and then hits Turner for 28 yards to enter Garner side of the field for the first time in the game. Turner's 5-yard run is erased by a Comet false start and Atkinson makes a terrific defensive play on 3rd and 10 to bat Reid's pass away. Then Terrence Fussell blocks the Comet punt on fourth down and David Thompson recovers at the Garner 39. But the Trojan drive ends with a pick and the Comets have the ball on the Garner 46. The Comets sustain their only scoring drive, driving to the Trojan 24 where an unusual double foul, Clayton hold and Garner personal foul occurs on a 3 yard loss on reverse by DeAnthony Barbour. However the Trojan penalty is marked off for 19 yards giving the Comets first and 8 for some reason. Erick Winkler rushes twice for 6 yards a piece and Brad Stanback covers the final 7 yards, diving in from a yard out for the Comets score. #8 (not on the Comet roster) adds the PAT to cut the score to 12-7.

The Trojans final drive of the half starts with Jarroll Holloway's recovery of the squib kick at their own 47. Darity hits Seth Council for 32 yards to the Comet 21. However time runs out when Darity is forced out at the Comet two yard line.

As the second half begins, the Comets get the ball first but failed to pick up the first for the 4th of 5 possessions. Moye dashes 29 yards and Demetrious Fairley adds 18 for consecutive first downs. Moye's 5 yard run takes it to the goal line and Darity sneaks it in and then adds the 2 point conversion for a 20-7 Garner lead. The Comets drive to the Garner 35 but Davonte Atkinson picks off the pass at the Trojan one. The 99-yard scoring drive is capped by Moye's 41 yard gallop and Robert Stephenson adds the kick for the 27-7 at the end of the third period.

The Trojans cap the scoring after another Comet series results in negative yards, taking over at their own 48 with 10:25 to go in the game. Andre Gillispie spells Moye and rumbles 9 and then 22 yards. Fairley covers the final 22 for the 33-7 final score and the Trojans remain unbeaten at 7-0.

The Trojans fall at home 5-2 to the Warriors, stopping their 4 game GNRC win streak. E.Wake gets four second half goals to grab the advantage. Luke Tompkins goal on Matt Wescoe's assist, at 32:10 of the first half knots the game and sends it to the half tied at 1-1 despite shots on goal favoring E.Wake 12-5. The Warriors strike first on a penalty kick by Mike Paye which gets by Drew Gay, who was looking to extend his streak in goal. The Trojans jump on top in the second frame on Jake Smith's goal off the assist of Hector Kunichek just 0:26 into the period. Terrific defensive plays by Gabe Chrismon and Dillon Creech keep the Trojans on top until the 24:57 mark when Paye ties it again at 2-2. Cliff Smith just misses a header that goes high. At 26:21, E.Wake registers the tie-breaker by Gallardo to go up 3-2. Luis Aragon and Baltazar add late goals as the Warrior pull away for the win.

Trojans take the Homecoming win over the Spartans

LIVE WEBCAST provided by EZStream Web services (disable pop-up blocker!)
The Trojan Sports Network crew of Chris Edwards ('06) and Dustin Williams ('99) bring you all the play-by-play action!

With Homecoming Queen Tamirrah Davis and King DaMetrius Upchurch looking on, the Trojans get two TD runs from Michael Brantley and shut the Spartans out in the second half of the 28-7 win. Kadedra Jacobs and Hunter Brown take the Princess and Prince title and the Senior Class of 2009 are crowned the champions of the float competition. The Trojan Seniors from the football team, marching band and cheerleaders were recognized in pre-game ceremonies. Miss Samantha Richmond, a 5th grader from Yates Mill Elementary, renders a stirring performance of the National Anthem.

The Trojans start slow, again, but soon start to show a little of the swagger Garner football has enjoyed for more than 25 years. Garner gets on the board first on Ian Hunter's 13 yard reverse, with BG Howell making textbook fake, for a 6-0 lead. Jeremy Conyers picks up 22 yards on the 8-play, 61 yard drive that consumes 4 minutes of the first quarter. The drive is aided by a SSS pass interference call. The Spartans answer with a methodical 17 play drive which ends the first and stretches into the second quarter. DJ Bunn and Jarocka Jones pile up 15 and 38 yards respectively of the 80 yard drive, with Bunn's 19 yard TD run negated by a Spartan holding call. Anthony Rouse caps the drive with a 6 yard run and Henry Johnson's PAT gives SSS the 7-6 lead.

The teams trade stalled drives and Garner's next possession ends but barely when Josh Brooks is ruled out-of-bounds on a terrific catch at the SSS 40. Howell's punt gives the Spartans the ball at their own 44 and proceed to drive to the Trojan 18 as the half is winding down. Aston Anglin-Stone pressures Rouse to incomplete pass and Connor McLaurin nails him for an eight yard loss as the half ends. Statistically, the half shaped up to a defensive struggle with Garner managing a mere 43 yards of offense and the Spartans only 134.

The Trojan fans, which included the reunion Class of 1988, were treated to halftime festivities emceed by Lauren Otto and Curtis Reed. The week-long fun and games were recapped and culminated in the crowning of Miss Davis and Mr. Upchurch.

The Spartans first snap of the second half ends with Terrence Jones recovering a Spartan fumble and the Trojans take over at the SSS 26. Four straight Conyers rushes moves the ball down to the five and Brantley bulls it in for the score. Howell hits Brooks, who makes a spectacular one-handed grab for the two point conversion and its 14-7 Trojans. The Spartans start at their 18 and go no where before punting back to the Trojans. Hunter returns the kick to the SSS 35 and the Trojans are looking at another short field. Howell hits Brooks for 28 yards for first and goal. Conyers sweeps for 3 yards and Hunter musters 3 to take it to the goal line where Conyers dives for the touchdown. Howell's kick makes it 21-7.

The Spartans get a big return from Jarocka Jones, who rambles 30 yards with the kick to the Trojan 45. A bad snap creates a nine yard loss which Bunn gains back 8. The third and 11 pass falls incomplete and the Spartans are forced to punt. Another poor snap forces Henry Johnson to elude the Trojan rush but comes up short of the first down. The Trojans fail to take advantage of the break and turn the ball back over on an interception deep in Spartan territory by Junior Bryant. The Spartans are able to drive into Trojan territory but a fumble kills the drive at the 41. On first down, Howell scrambles 19 yards and Conyers picks up 5 of his 54 yards for the night as the third quarter ends.

The Trojans continue the drive when Howell hits Conyers on a 17 yard screen to the Spartan 20 yard line. Brantley takes it the final yards on two carries scoring on his second 5 yard TD run for the final 28-7 score. Let's give a nod to the Trojan defensive stalwarts Carl Redd, Chaz Damon and Jonathon Stevenson who demonstated extra effort this evening. The Trojans move to 5-3 on the year and more importantly 3-1 in the GNRC. They head into the bye week on a 3-game win streak and are next in action two weeks for a critical showdown at SE Raleigh (6-2 and 3-1 in the GNRC).

JV Trojans demolish the Spartans, remain unbeaten

Juwan Moye takes the opening kick 80 yards and he and Demetrious Fairley score 3 touchdowns a piece as the Trojans roll to a 35-0 halftime score and coast to 41-20 at Smithfield-Selma. Moye and Fairly combine for 257 yard in the half while the stout Trojan (6-0) defense holds SSS to just 61 yards total offense during the period.

After Moyes scores just 13 seconds into the game, SSS turns the ball over on downs, failing on 4th and 1 at the Trojan goal line. Cameron Redd sacks the SSS QB and Garner takes over at their own 1 yard line. It takes just three plays for another Garner score. Fairley sweeps for 8 yards and Moye dashes 53 to the SSS 39. Fairley takes it to the house and Connor Torruella's PAT, 2nd of 5 on the evening, makes it 14-0. The Spartans again show some offense, moving the ball to the Garner 16. Donald Jones is dropped for an 8 yard loss and after two Shane Smith incompletions, 4th and 18 fails and the Trojans take over for the second straight series on downs.

The drive stalls for the only Garner punt of the half, despite a 22 yard Moye run, aided by a terrific block by wideout Seth Council. From their own 34, Redd again drops the SSS back for a two yard loss and two incompletions give the ball back to Garner at their own 37. Fairley bulls his way up the gut for 26 yards. Shaquille Nurriden runs a reverse and a Garner penalty (just two total on the night) brings up 2nd and 8 from the SSS 36. Fairley covers the distance for his second score and its 21-0 with 0:05 to go in the first quarter, dominated by the Trojan front line of Bryan Watkins, JaRod McAllister, Michael Ricks and David Thompson.

The ensuing Spartan drive ends with a 16 yard punt and the Trojans have it first and ten at their own 49. Dwight Darity hits Tyler Thornton for 43 yards to the 8 and Moye covers the final yards on two carries. 28-0 Garner with 10:08 to go in the half. SSS drives to the Garner 14 but incurs a false start and backed up the 19. Andre Gillispie nails Smith for a 3 yard loss and then on 3rd and 18, Watkins hits the SSS QB to cause a fumble Thompson picks up and dashes to the 45. Fairley drives for 18 to the SSS 37 and Moye takes it in from there, running over a SSS defender at the 3 and aided by a textbook block from Brandon Smith. Garner leads 35-0 at the half. Nicholas Martinez and Alan Careaga end the half combining for a sack of the SSS QB.

Daniel Alston ends the first Spartan possession of the second half and returns it to the SSS 10, where Fairley takes it in for a 41-0 Garner lead. The Spartans get on the board when TJ Toney dashes 65 yards for the score. After a SSS pooch kick recovered by Watkins, the Trojan drive ends with a fumbled punt attempt and Dylan Homick takes it in for the Spartan score. Smith's two point run makes it 41-14.

Davonte Atkinson intercepts a SSS pass but a Garner fumble turns it back over to the Spartans at the Garner 2 yard line. SSS scores on the final play of the game for the 41-20 final.
