Trojans Downed by Millbrook in Second Glaxo Game

LIVE WEB CAST.

It was another tough showing for the Garner Trojans on Tuesday as they fell to long time rival Millbrook 61-49 in the 38th annual GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational at Broughton High School's Holliday Gymnasium.

Millbrook began the game on a 6-0 run which prompted Garner Head Coach to call at 30 second time out to settle down his team and whatever Gray said during the timeout worked as Garner outscored the Wildcats 17-6 to close the first quarter with at 17-12 lead.

The second quarter was nip and tuck until about midway through the quarter when Garner sent Stephon Drane to the bench to catch a breather. While Drane was on the bench, the Wildcats used their quickness to exploit some of Garner's flaws and took a double-digit lead. However, Garner came back and made it a game as they trailed by nine 34-25 at halftime.

Millbrook dominated the opening of the third quarter as they built the lead back up to double-digits, but just as they have all season long the scrappy Trojans came storming back and eventually cut the Millbrook lead down to five points about halfway through the game's third stanza. However, Garner's turnover bug bite them again late in the period as Millbrook's lead grew to 13 points at 51-37 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Millbrook was just too much for the Trojans as they continued their up tempo style of play and forced the Trojans into foul trouble which limited what Garner could do on offense and as a result the Wildcats came away with a 51-37 win to advance to the fifth place game of the Shavlik Randolph Foundation Invitational where they will await the winner of the Riverside/Cardinal Gibbons game.

Garner falls to 3-6 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 8-3. With the loss, Garner's lead in the all-time series is cut to one game as Garner the series 29-28. The Trojans will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 5 when they return to GNRC as they travel to take on the long time rival in the Smithfield-Selma Spartans.

Trojans Fall to Kinston in Round One of Glaxo

WEB CAST.

It wasn't the night that Garner Head Coach Eddie Gray had hoped for from his Trojan team. Garner won the tip-off but that would be about the only thing that Garner won on Monday night as they fell to Kinston 73-46.

Kinston took a 21-8 lead after the first quarter as Garner couldn't find any type of rhythm on the offensive end and the second quarter wasn't much different as the Trojans missed several wide open layups, but held their own on the glass only being out rebounded by two at 13-11, but Kinston's Reggie Bullock poured in 18 first half points including three, three pointers, and at halftime Garner was down 37-23.

The second half was more of the same as Reggie Bullock sat on the bench most of the third quarter, but still managed a game high 30 points to lead Kinston. On the Garner end, Stephon Drane played his best game of the year the Western Kentucky signee had 14 points and 7 rebounds to pace Garner.

But, Garner's offensive struggles were shown in the post game stats as Garner shot just 33% from the field and just 38 % from the line.

With the loss, Garner is now 3-5 on the year, and will return to action on Tuesday at 12:40 when they will face Millbrook, who lost to Walton, GA and NC State signee, Ryan Harrow by one 61-60.

The Trojan Sports Network will take the air at 12:20 tomorrow with a LIVE WEB CAST!

Balanced Effort Leads Garner Past Clayton

LIVE WEB CAST.

The Varsity Boys Basketball team continued their hot streak inside the GNRC conference as they picked up a huge road victory over longtime rival, the Clayton Comets on Tuesday night with at 76-67 win at Clayton's Jerry Smith Court.

Both teams played a very up tempo style of offense for the entire game, but it all began in the opening period, however, the first quarter was dictated by sloppy play and a lot of miscues as neither team could get into a rhythm, but Garner held a three point lead at 17-14 after the first quarter.

Clayton would find their stride a little quicker than Garner in the second quarter, but the Trojan hung tough and at one point in the second quarter, Garner had no seniors on the court, but still managed to hold their on and took at one point lead at 33-32 into the locker room at halftime.

The third stanza was dominated by Garner as it seemed the Trojans could do no wrong with the Trojans holding at seven point lead after three at 57-50. The Trojan lead grew to as many as 13 points midway through the fourth quarter, but as most rivalry games do, this one went down to the final minutes as Clayton cut the Garner lead to six before the Trojans found their stride and hit the free throws down the stretch as Garner downed Clayton 76-67.

One of the biggest keys to the Garner victory was the free throw shooting, Garner was 18 of 29 for 62% for the game, while Clayton was just 3 of 11 from the charity strip for 27%.

With the win, Garner is now 3-4 overall and a perfect 2-0 in the Conference as they get set for a early season conference test on Friday night as Garner will host Knightdale at 7:30 at Trojan Coliseum.

Scoring:
GARNER: D. Johnson 22, G. Wilson 15, E. McClain 13, S. Drane 11, D. Dorsey 9, J. McClain 4, D. Anderson 3, M. Sloan 1.

Clayton: A. Parris 17, T. Jones 10, D. Johnson 9, T. Williams 8, S. Clayton 6, Q. Lee 6, K. Fraiser 4, J. Getty 4, A. Banks 3.

Varsity Girls Fall to Comets

Trojans Open Conference Play with Win

WEB CAST.

The Garner Trojans began their quest to win back to back conference Championships for the first time since 1996, 1997 and 1998 when the Trojans won three stright conference titles. However, Garner (2-4) had their hands full as the welcomed in the West Johnston Wildcats to Garner for the Conference opener.

West Johnston was the last GNRC team to bead Garner as they downed the Trojans in the semi-finals of last years conference tournament, however, tonight would very different than the previous meeting as Garner jumped out to a fast start in the first quarter just dominating the Wildcats with their quickness and transition game as they took at 24-8 lead after the first quarter.

Garner would contiune their hot play as they opened the lead to 20 points at halftime with at 47-27 lead led in the first half by Stephon Drane who had 10 first half points to lead all scores at the break. The second half was more of the same as Garner continued to pour on the pressure and put away West Johnston with at 88-63 win to improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 inside the Conference.

The biggest key to the game was free throw shooting as Garner went 14 of 25 from the line while West Johnston was just 6 of 22 from the Charity stripe. The Trojans will now travel to Clayton on Tuesday night for a 7:30 tip off.

In their previous two games, the Lady Trojans lacked the on the court expereince that they needed to come away with a win, however, on Friday night, the Lady Trojans were finally the more experiecned team on the court as they dominated West Johnston 54-42.

While Garner won by 12 points, the final score was not indiciative of just how dominate Garner was in the contest. West Johnston cut the lead to 10 points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Lady Trojans played smart down the stretch and sank some key free throws to win the contest by 12.

The Lady Trojans will also travel to Clayton on Tuesday at 6:00

Enloe Comes From Behind to Down Trojans

WEB CAST.

Coming into the game on Tuesday night, Garner head coach, Eddie Gray wanted to limit the turnovers as his club had committed over 30 turnovers in their past two games, the Trojans did that as they had just 21 turnovers on Tuesday evening, but 21 was still too many as Enloe mounted a second half comeback led by Jared Blakney as the Eagles downed Garner 57-52.

Garner (1-4), fell behind 5-0 right off the get go as Enloe score five quick points prompting Coach Gray to call for a timeout. Following the timeout, Garner went on a 9-0 run to take a 9-5 lead and leading Enloe Coach Tommy Moore to signal for a stoppage in play. The rest of the first stanza was back and fourth and after the first eight minutes of play Garner had a 19-14 lead.

The second quarter was owned by Garner as the Trojans would grow their lead to ten points when Gavin Wilson hit back to back three's from the left wing, but again Enloe would make a comeback and cut the lead to six points at 33-27 at halftime.

After having just two first half points, Stephon Drane, scored eight points to pace the Trojans in the third quarter as Garner had a 46-41 lead after three. In the fourth quarter, Enloe found their stride as Garner made some sloppy passes and Enloe took advantage on the boards to climb back into the game and take a four point lead.

However, Garner hung tough with the Eagles who went to the regional semi-final a year ago and cut the lead to three with 32.9 seconds left. The Trojans had a shot at the tie, but the three went begging and Enloe (7-0) held on for a 57-52 win.

The Trojans will open conference play at home on Friday night when they welcome the West Johnston Wildcats (3-2) to Garner for a 7:30 tip-off.

Trojans Rally Falls Short at Enloe

WEB CAST.

The Varsity Basketball team continued their parade of perennial powers as they traveled to Enloe to take on the Eagles who many believe will challenge Terry Sanford for the East Championship and on Thursday night a very sloppy game was played as the two teams combined for 55 turnovers (31 of them by the Trojans) and Enloe came away with a 67-56 win.

Garner played the up tempo style of offense and ran the floor with the Eagles but after the first quarter, the Trojans were down by seven at 19-12. Enloe began to pull away in the second quarter as Garner at one point only had two second quarter points, but Sophomore Forward, Gavin Wilson found hit shot and hit two big three point shots and had four big field goals to keep Garner in it at 36-23 at halftime.

In the second half, Enloe's lead grew to near 20 before Garner rallied with big baskets from several players and the big key was when Donald Johnson, Garner's leading three point shooter found his outside shot and hit two second half three's as the Trojans cut the Eagle lead to 5 points with around 2:00 left in the game.

But, it would again be the turnover's rearing their ugly head as Garner had several empty possessions and Enloe pulled away to improve to 5-0 on the year, as they beat Garner 67-56. With the loss, Garner is 1-3 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday night at 7:30 when they host the same Enloe team.

Varsity Girls Fall to Enloe

Garner's girls were in a physical run and gun game with Enloe just like the boys. The Lady Trojans also had trouble finding their shot to begin the game as Enloe defeated Garner 70-50

JV Boys Win Opener

The JV Boys Basketball team won their season opener at home tonight as they defeated Enloe 62-53. Garner was led in scoring by Larry Richardson who had 14 points and Dominique Reed who had 13 to lead the Trojans.

Enloe was already three games into their season and the Trojans came away with a big victory of the powerful Eagle bunch. The JV Trojans are on the road for the first time this year on Wednesday night when they travel to Enloe at 7:30.

Garner Falls to Terry Sanford

WEB CAST.

The Garner Trojans welcomed the defending Eastern Regional Champion, Terry Sanford Bulldogs, to Garner on Tuesday night. Garner had already been defeated by the Bulldogs 67-42 to start the year, but this night, things would be a little different as the Trojans were able to hold their own, but still fell to Terry Sanford 61-53.

Both teams got off to a slow start to begin the contest, as the pace was fast and furious and neither team could find any rhythm but the Bulldogs took a 13-8 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter would be a tough one for Garner as Terry Sanford got many transition baskets to grow the lead to double digits and the lead would be 13 at halftime at 37-24. However, Garner was playing most of the second quarter without Senior Forward, Stephon Drane, who picked up three quick fouls and had to sit for most of the second quarter.

In the second half, the Bulldogs would increase the lead to as many as 18 before Garner began to chip away as one of the biggest sparks came from Josh McClain who came off the bench to 12 points for Garner, seven of those coming in the second half.

But in the end, 32 turnovers would kill the Trojans as they fell to Terry Sanford to 61-53. Garner is now 1-2 on the season and will have a quick turn around as they travel to Enloe on Thursday night at 7:30.

Trojans Avenge Loss to Southern Durham with Blowout Win

WEB CAST.

Garner showed no signs of a Thanksgiving hangover on Saturday night as they came out of fire and defeated Southern Durham 77-56 at Southern Durham in the first annual Spartan Thanksgiving Classic.

The Trojans jumped out to a 27-20 lead after the first quarter as the Spartans couldn't keep up with the fast paced Trojan offense. The second quarter was more of the same as Garner kept building on their lead and Stephon Drane poured in 16 first half points to lead Garner to a 49-29 halftime lead.

While Garner had played an impressive first half, memories recalled the Spartans 22 point second half comeback over Garner in last season's second round state playoff game. However, there would be no second half comeback as Garner kept the pressure on as they got three third quarter three pointers from junior Donald Johnson as the Trojans built their lead to 61-44 after three.

In the end, Garner's depth was just too much for the Southern Durham team who only had ten players on their roster and Garner got every player some time on the floor as they cruised to a 77-56 win. Garner is now 1-1 on the season and will host Terry Sanford on Tuesday night at 7:30 at Trojan Gym.

Scoring: GARNER: S. Drane 23, D. Johnson 15, M. Koscielny 9, E. McClain 9, D. Dorsey 8,
J. McClain 6, G. Wilson 5, D. Anderson 4. S. Durham: J. Sanders 16, J. Hunter 13, A. Satterwhite 10, P. Jones 7, D. Jordan 6, E. Collins 5, K. Dores 2.

Girls Lose second game of the year

The Varsity Girls preceded the Boys game on Saturday night and the girls hung with the very talented Southern Durham team for the first half, however, in the third quarter, Southern Durham began to pull away as they defeated Garner by 20 points at 60-40.

The Girls will be in action on Tuesday night at 6:00 when they host Terry Sanford.

Season Ends for Varsity Football

WEB CAST.

The 2009 season ended in the same place that it started for the Garner Trojans on Friday night as they lost to Wake Forest-Rolesville 42-8 at Heritage High School. It didn't take the Cougars long to put a gap between the two teams as Trea Jones went 55 yards on third and two and it was 6-0 WFR as the PAT was no good.

On the ensuing kickoff, Garner fumbled the football and WFR recovered at the 12 yard line and three plays later the Cougars were up 14-0 after converting a 2 point try. Garner's offense finally got on the field and marched down the field however, the drive stalled and Garner had to settle for a 32 yard field goal try from Connor Torruella however, the field goal was blocked and Garner was still down 14.

Wake Forest got the ball back and the Trojan defense came up big forcing a Cougar punt from their own end zone. The snap on the punt went over the head of Will Braddy and out of the end zone for a safety and it was 14-2 WFR. The Cougars would score another first half TD and heading to the locker room, Garner was down 21-2.

The third quarter was more of a field position game for both teams as Wake Forest scored only one touchdown in the third period. However, Garner had to rely on junior quarterback, Cyle Nicely, after freshman quarterback, Lemond Johnson, went out to a injury.

Nicely would direct the Garner offense down the field and just when it looked like the Trojan drive would stall near the goal line, Garner got a roughing the passer call to extend the drive and keep it alive inside the WFR 5 yard line. Two plays later, Juwan Moye, capped the drive with the loan Garner touchdown of the night and it was 35-8 in favor of WFR.

On the Cougars next drive the Garner defense held until 4th down when the Cougars on fourth down and four fired a 35 yard touchdown pass and with the extra point, WFR had a 42-8 lead.

Both teams just ran out the clock to end the game and end the Trojans season with at 42-8 loss. Garner finished the 2009 season with a 7-6 record and will look forward to the 2010 season. The Trojans would also like to say thank you to the class of 2009 for all of their hard work and dedication.

Garner Downs Wakefield to Advance to Round 2

WEBCAST.

Round one of the playoffs began on Friday night at a very soggy Trojan Stadium on Friday night as Garner welcomed Wakefield to town for the third all-time meeting between the two schools.

After playing the field position game early in the games first quarter, Wakefield jumped on the board first as Niklas Sade nailed a 23 yard field goal to give the Wolverines at 3-0 lead.

Garner struck for the first touchdown of the game on their first drive of the second quarter as Demetrius Fairley scored from 29 yards out to give Garner a 7-3, which would be the halftime score.

Wakefield was the first team to find the end zone in the second half as Freshman quarterback, Connor Mitch found Alex Starnes for a touchdown and a 10-7 lead for the Wolverines. It was Wakefield scoring again at the beginning of the fourth quarter as Mitch found Nigel King who tip toed the sideline for the touchdown and a 10 point Wakefield lead at 17-7 with just over 10:43 to go in the game.

But, Garner came right back with some big runs, none bigger than a run on fourth and one. That's when Garner's spectacular sophomore, Juwan Moye, broke tackle after tackle and rumbled 56 yards down to the five yard line where two plays later, quarterback Lemond Johnson found Dwight Darity at the one yard line, Darity then dove into the end zone for the score and cut the Wakefield lead to three at 17-14 with over 8 minutes to play.

Wakefield came right back and it looked like Garner would hold the Wolverines to a three and out, however, a 15 yard roughing the kicker penalty kept the drive alive, but Garner's defense again came up big again and forced a punt.

Garner got the ball back down three with 6:02 to play Garner would move the ball down the field and again it was Juwan Moye who had another big run to keep the drive alive and get down to the three yard line where the super sophomore, Demetrius Fairley punched it in and gave the Trojans a 21-17 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Wakefield fumbled the kick-off and Terrance Fussell picked up the loose ball and rumbled down to the 19 yard line, however, Garner would go three and out and give the ball right back to Wakefield.

The Wolverines would move the ball in the wrong direction and on a third down and 15 Connor Mitch fired a pass down field that was intercepted by Bryan Watkins for his second pick of the night to seal the win for Garner.

Garner is now 8-2 in the first round of the playoffs under Head Coach Nelson Smith and the Trojans lead the all-time series with Wakefield two games to one.

With the win, the Trojans are on to round two of the state playoffs for the second straight year and they will travel to Wake Forest-Rolesville next Friday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be play at Heritage High School next week.

Garner Falls at Harnett Central

Harnett Central took their opening drive of the game in for a touchdown and never looked back as they downed Garner 34-9 in the regular season finale at Harnett Central's Trojan Stadium on Friday night.

Garner would be unable to mount any offense against the Trojan defense as Harnett Central was up 20-0 at halftime. In the second half, the Garner offense put several drives together but had nothing to show for it until late in the third quarter when Connor Torruella hit a field goal to make it 34-3.

The loan Trojan touchdown came late in the third quarter when Jeremiah Davis rumbled 77 yards, but the PAT was blocked and Harnett Central milked the clock for a 35-9 win.

Garner will now await the release of the NCHSAA Football Playoff Brackets late on Saturday night to see where they will be playing next Friday night.

Trojans Win OT Thriller

WEB CAST.

East Wake and Garner played just another ho-hum typical Garner/East Wake football game Friday night at Trojan Stadium. The Warriors struck first and took a 6-0 lead after the first possession of the game.

Garner answered with a field goal to make it 6-3 before taking at 10-6 lead on a 20 yard touchdown reception by Juwan Moye. After another field goal by Conner Torruella the Trojans held a 13-6 lead, which would be the halftime score.

On the first possession of the second half, East Wake was looking to get back in the game, but Isiah Moore had other ideas as he picked off the Chris Pernell pass and took it 33 yards to the house for a 20-6 Garner lead.

Garner would eventually stretch the lead to 27-6 when they scored on touchdown pass to Brian Watkins. But, East Wake would answer as they struck for a quick touchdown to make it 27-13. The Warriors then recovered back to back onside kicks and scored on both possessions to tie the game at 27 all and head into overtime.

This was the first time Garner has played a overtime game since they defeated Millbrook in round one of last year's State Playoffs. East Wake got the ball first in the overtime period and after a incomplete pass, Chris Pernell went to the air where the pass was picked off by Justin Chavis to end the drive.

All Garner needed was a field goal and the Trojans were forced to rely on Freshman quarterback, Lemond Johnson, after starting quarterback, Cody Woodall, was injured during the game.

After back to back running plays got Garner inside the five on third and goal, the Trojans tried to center the ball for the game winning field goal, but the Trojans fumbled the ball but recovered setting the stage for Connor Torruella.

For the second time this year, Torruella would be the hero as he nailed a 26 yard field goal from the left hash and the quick was just inside the right upright and Garner won 30-27.

With the win, Garner has secured no worse than a third place finish in the GNRC. The Trojans (6-4; 4-2) will close the regular season at Harnett Central next Friday night.

JV Trojans Down East Wake to Stay Perfect

It was another typical, back and forth Garner/East Wake football game as they two teams met at Johnny Sasser Stadium on Thursday night.

The two teams went into the locker room tied at halftime. After East Wake scored to take the lead, Garner came back and scored to take a 19-13 lead as the point after try was no good.

However, East Wake still had time on the clock to drive for a game winning score, but the Trojan defense stepped up big a held the Warriors to a four and out and preserved the 19-13 Trojan Win.

Garner is now 9-0 on the season and will return home for the final game of the season next Thursday when they host Harnett Central at 7:00.

Soccer Falls in Overtime

Garner honored their seniors at Trojan Stadium on Monday night as they hosted the newest edition to the GNRC Harnett Central. After playing a tight first part of the week. Garner got the first scoring chance of night, as Senior Matt Wescoe, scored on a PK to give Garner a 1-0 lead.

That would be the score at halftime as Garner honored their four seniors. However, in the second half, Harnett Central scored to tie the game at one and the game went to overtime. Harnett Central scored the only goal of the overtime session and Harnett Central spoiled Garner's senior night defeating Garner 2-1.

**JV Trojans lost 3-0.

Volleyball Falls in First Round to Ashley

After a great regular season and a share of the Conference Championship, the Lady Trojans hosted the Ashley High School Eagles at Trojan Gym today in the first round of the NCHSAA State Playoffs.

Ashely came in as the number three seed out of the Midsoutheastern Conference and showed why that conference was so competitive. The Eagles jumped out to a 18-9 lead in the first game and Garner couldn't get anything going in the first game falling 25-12.

Garner found some rhythm in the second game, before Ashley got on another roll to win the second game 25-17. But, the Lady Trojans got things going in the third game as they were hitting on all cylinders and edged Ashley 25-22.

However, the fourth game would go to Ashley as both teams went back and forth before the Eagles came away with a 26-24 win and they won the match 3 games to 1.

But give a tip of the cap to the Lady Trojans for an outstanding season. Garner finishes the season 15-7, and co champions of the Greater Neuse River Conference. Congratulations to Coach Jason Boyette and his Lady Trojans for keeping the Winning Tradition going.

Trojans Shock Wake County with Win over Bulldogs

Web Cast.

Southeast Raleigh and Garner came into play ready for another showdown in one of the most competitive rivalry's in Wake County. The Bulldogs came into play at 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the GNRC while Garner came into play at 4-4 and 2-2 inside the Conference.

The Bulldogs struck first on their opening possession as Gabe Henderson scrambled six yards for a touchdown to make it 7-0 Bulldogs. However, Garner would answer on their next drive. After a face mask on SER, got the ball to midfield on the kickoff, Garner would rumble down the field, where Demetrius Fairley would score on a four yard run to tie the game at seven.

Garner took a 14-7 lead when Cody Woodall found Brian Watkins in the end zone for a 5 yard TD pass. But the lead was short lived as Southeast scored to tie the game at 14. The Bulldogs then scored 14 in a row including a 24 yard interception return for a touchdown to make it 28-14 SER.

The Trojans would find some offense again as Cody Woodall found Marques Townsend for a 5-yard TD pass to make it 28-21 Bulldogs at the half.

Garner got the ball to begin the second half and promptly marched down the field and tied the game at 28 all when Demetrius Fairley broke loose for 12 yards.

Southeast would answer running just two plays on the ensuing drive, as Henderson found a receiver for a 67 yard touchdown pass to give SER a 35-28 lead. But Garner would answer on the ensuing possession as they marched down the field before Juwan Moye found the end zone from third yards out to tie the game at 35.

On the ensuing kickoff, Connor Torruella kicked the ball off one of the Bulldog up men, and the ball bounced right back to the Trojan place kicker and the Trojans were back in business, with the football in great field position. Garner would march down the field, but the drive would face a important fourth down and two from the SER 17, that's when Woodall ran the bootleg, and found some day light get nine yards and convert on fourth down and keep the drive alive. Just two plays later, Juwan Moye, capped the drive with a 15 yards touchdown run to give Garner a 42-35 lead.

After SER went three and out on their next possession, Garner got the ball at their own 47 yard line. Garner picked up 14 yards on first down to get into SER territory after a two yard gain to get to the Bulldog 37, Moye took the hand off and went in for another score and Garner was up 48-35. However, a unsportsmanlike conduct flag was thrown on Garner which forced Torruella to kick a 35 yard PAT, which would have been good from 45 and the Trojans were up 49-35.

After the two teams traded turnovers, Southeast came back with a quick 7 play scoring drive, capped off by a Gabe Henderson 10 yard touchdown run to make it 49-42. On the ensuing possession, Garner went three and out and gave Southeast one more shot with two timeouts left.

The Bulldogs moved the ball close to midfield and Henderson fired a pass over the middle that was intercepted by Gavin Wilson and sealed the deal to give Garner the 49-42 win.

Garner is now 5-4 on the season and 10-2 all-time vs. Southeast Raleigh. The Trojans will host East Wake next Friday night at Trojan Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7:30.

Cross Country Finishes Season in Conference Meet

It was a up and down season for the Trojan Cross Country team, however, the Trojans continued to have great showings throughout the course of the season and the highlight of the season, had to be Senior runner, Michelle Bailey.

Garner concluded their season earlier this week in the GNRC meet at East Wake and while both the girls and boys teams finished fifth in the meet Tuesday, Michelle Bailey continued her dominance by stunning the favor West Johnston runner to finish first over all.

Congratulations to the Trojans on a great season!

Another Good Showing for the Band

The Mighty Trojan Marching Band represented GMHS very well at the 2009 Cape Fear Colt Classic band competition on a very chilly Saturday, October 17th afternoon in Fayetteville.

The color guard and percussion both brought home second place trophies. The Mighty Trojans won first place in marching, general effect, music and overall for Class A bands.

Volleyball Rallies From Two Down to Win in 5 Sets

Garner didn't get any style points on Monday night, but they did manage to come back from the brink of elimination in the semi-finals of the Greater Neuse River Conference Tournament on Monday night at Trojan Gym, as the Lady Trojans downed East Wake 3 games to 2.

The first two games of the match were all East Wake as the Warriors dominated game one winning 25-10. In the second game, Garner jumped out to a early 6-0 lead prompting East Wake to call a timeout, however, the Warriors came fighting back as they defeated Garner in game two 25-17.

Garner was now in a must win situation in game three and it would be a back and forth contest with each team seizing the momentum at different points in the pivotal third game. But, the Lady Trojans came away with a nip and tuck 26-24 win to cut the Warrior lead in half at 2 games to 1.

With the win in game three, the Lady Trojans had begun to find their stride and took a early 9-3 lead in the fourth game and again East Wake could call time to try and stop the Garner momentum. That timeout did little to stop the rally that Garner had brewing as they quickly went up 16-8 before East Wake called their final timeout of the game.

Following the timeout, Trojan Senior, Kasey Hamrick, served five consecutive aces to make it 23-9 in favor of Garner, the Lady Trojans would win the fourth game of the match 25-10 to fight back to tie the match.

Garner had come all the way back to tie the match and send it to a pivotal fifth game and as the final game got underway there was little doubt who was in control as Kristen Powell got three of Garner's first four points of the final game en route to a Anna Burton ace to cap the comeback as Garner won the fifth game 15-5 and win the match 3 games to 2.

With the win, the Lady Trojans will advance to the Greater Neuse River Conference Tournament Championship Wednesday night at Trojan Gym against Harnett Central who defeated Southeast Raleigh 3 games to none to advance to the finals.

The Lady Trojans will also host the programs fist ever home playoff match on Saturday.
