Trojans down the Knights, back on top of the GNRC

LIVE WEBCAST courtesy of EZ Stream Web Services

DaMetrius Upchurch scores 19, with 10 rebounds and Albert Smith adds 18 on outstanding 7-for-8 shooting and the Trojans blast Knightdale 71-60 at Trojan Gym. The much anticipated showdown of 8-1 teams has the Trojan defense forcing 21 Knightdale turnovers. The Trojans are 9-1 in the conference and drop the Knights into a tie for second with Clayton at 8-2. The remarkably close first half has both teams shooting well, Garner 57% (16-of-28 shots) and Knightdale 52% (16-of-31) en route to a 39-35 Trojan lead at the break. The Trojan defense does come up with 6 blocked shots in the period as Upchurch avoids the early foul trouble that plagued him Tuesday at Clayton. Smith is red hot, nailing all 5 of his first half shots for 12 points. Garner gathers a 14-9 rebounding margin and both teams commit just six turnovers.

The second half starts with Garner scoring 7 straight to open a 46-35 lead. After Josh Gorham's steal and three-point play, Smith and Cordero Hunter nail jumpers to provide Garner breathing room they enjoy most of the remainder of the game. Despite an uncharacteristic poor free throw shooting night, Upchurch is able to control the paint to post his 14th "double-double" of the season and keep the margin comfortable until Tyler Nicholson and Cam Mealy hit back-to-back threes to cut the Garner lead to 66-60 with 52.9 seconds to go. But the Knights would get no closer as Smith ices the game with two from the line and Hunter picks off the Trojans 9th steal of the evening and scores for the final 71-60 margin. Garner finishes the game shooting 61% while the Knights manage 44%, with 22 turnovers and Garner enjoys a 25-17 rebound margin. The Trojans travel to SSS Tuesday night looking for Coach Gray's 312th career win:

Trojans rally to nip the Comets

LIVE WEBCAST courtesy of EZStream Web Services

Carl Redd's free throws with 5.7 seconds seal the 73-70 conference win at Clayton. The Trojans grab a share of the lead in the GNRC at 8-1. An exciting game that saw Garner's first lead at 69-68 with just 2:12 to go. DaMetrius Upchurch and Cordero Hunter score 20 each and Albert Smith adds 10. Garner's defense forces eight steals and 17 Comet turnovers while committing just 9 turnovers themselves. Both teams show exceptional shooting touch, with Garner finishing 57% from the floor (26-for-45) and Clayton 61% (25-for 41) and both teams equal from the line at 17-for-22.

Clayton at times had leads of ten at two different points. Clayton grabs an early rebounding advantage, beating Garner on the boards 7-2 in the opening period but Garner ultimately erases that margin by game end 24-19. With Upchurch and Jamal Barrett finding foul trouble and out of the game for extended periods, Darius Hicks gives the Trojans quality minutes in the paint and Hunter's hot shooting (6-of-8 in the first half, 3-for4 from behind the arc), Garner trails just 39-34 at the half. Upchurch sits virtually the whole second period after picking up his second foul. He gets called for a quick whistle to open the second half and another with 2:37 to go in the third, forcing him to sit the remainder of the period. Barrett's ball-handling is lost with his fifth foul and Garner down seven, 66-59 with 5:13 to go in the game. The Trojans step it up with four steals down the stretch, two by Emanuel McClain and one each by Hunter and Redd. The win allows Garner (11-8) to sweep the season series and claim a share of the conference lead headed into a huge Friday showdown with Knightdale (10-6, 8-1 in GNRC):

Congratulations to the GMHS DECA Club for representing Garner at the district competition on January 8, 2009. About 500 students were in attendance from Wake County and surrounding counties. Christopher LaGant finished in the top 10 of his event. 76% of our students "Met Proficency" and received a certificate on stage. The competition consisted of a computer test, and students were presented with a real world business problem and had to tell their suggestions to a judge. DECA is an association of marketing students .

Earlier this year, the club also raised $1,028.33 for Toys for Tots. This provided toys for about 80 children in Wake and surrounding counties. The students worked very hard to promote the campaign at school, creating flyers, banners, and commercials for the TrojanVision. They volunteered time during their lunches to talk with the student body and collect donations. In conjunction with the NC State football team's Toys for Tots campaign, Wolfpack Sports Marketing did a presentation with the club to share how they promote Toys for Tots and partner with Coca Cola and local Harris Teeters. NCSU donated 20 tickets to the NCSU vs. Georgia Tech basketball game, and they raffled these tickets to the students who made donations. Congratulations to Ms. Howell and the students for their terrific community service!!!!

The Trojans sweep the Wildcats

Trojans DaMetrius Upchurch
LIVE WEBCAST, courtesy of the EZStream Web Services
Enjoy the stellar play-by-play call of Trojan alums Chris Edwards ('06) & Jimmy Kelly!!

DaMetrius Upchurch scores 25 points and adds 11 rebounds as the Trojans shake off a slow start to pound W.Johnston 82-65 at Garner. The win caps a 4-for-4 night by Garner who wins both JV and both varsity games, re-scheduled due to inclimate weather this week. The Trojans (10-8, 7-1 in the GNRC) set up a huge showdown next Tuesday at Clayton (also 7-1 in the conference).

The Wildcats start off blistering hot with Mark Parker hitting three consecutive 3-pointers and roll to a 18-9 first quarter lead. But a big 33-point second quarter by the Trojans erases the deficit. Garner hits 11 of 13 shots in the quarter to go up 42-34 at the half. Garner uses 6-0 and 7-0 runs during the period and do not trail for the remainder of the game. Emanuel McClain proves to be spark plug for the Trojan rally with 5 steals in the period and finishes the game with seven and eight assists. Cordero Hunter is red hot hitting six of his last seven to finish with 19 points and Albert Smith adds 16, Karl Agenor 12.

As we saw with their last game, the Trojans come out of the locker room at the half with just 17 seconds to spare and head straight to the floor. It works with another crisp shooting period, hitting 11 of 18 while forcing the Wildcats to turn the ball over six times (20 for the game while Garner has just 13). The lead swells to 20 with McClain's 7th steal of the game feeding Smith for the jumper and its 69-49 and Garner coasts home for the conference win:

GMHS Chorus performs for historic inauguration

GMHS award winning Die Meistersingers were chosen to peform for the swearing in ceremonies of Governor Beverly Perdue. The group is made up of 39 juniors and seniors, “It was a big honor,” said Senior Sarah Harrington. Chorus Director Meredith Covington said she was really proud of the students for their performance. “They’re very hard-working and they’re very responsible,” she said. “It was thrilling. ”The unexpected invitation gave the group only five days to prepare for the event after winter break. But nerves were far from the Die Meistersingers as they sang the National Anthem in tuxedos and black gowns with pearls.

Senior Julie Dale conducted the Die Meistersingers’ 10 songs, including “My Country Tis of Thee” and the state song, from under a white tent just outside the front door of the Governor’s Mansion. “It’s such an awesome opportunity for our chorus to be put out there like this,” Dale said. Covington chose Dale to direct the chorus because she is consistently a hard worker and she is humble, which brings respect from her peers. “She’s an infinitely strong musician,” Covington said. “She’s a natural.”Dale was on the NC Honors Chorus in 2008, one of two students from Garner who received the invitation. She also went to Governor’s school last summer, a six-week program in Winston-Salem for academically-gifted students to further their education and love of the arts. Her parents, Bob and Amy Dale, are both proud of her accomplishments and look forward to her future. “She’s always been musical,” Amy said. She has been accepted to East Carolina University, UNC Greensboro and UNC Wilmington. Dale, who wants to become a chorus director one day, has music running through her veins. Her grandfather was a choir director for 30 years. She said conducting her peers at the inauguration was an excellent way to gain experience.

The members of the chorus are: Michael Callicutt, Julie Dale, Danesha Dolby, Brittany Fink, Jerian Floyd, Pierre Gilbert, Sarah Harrington, Patricia Hickman, Carmen Hicks, Patrick Holmes, Taylor Jackson, Kimberly Kimbrough, Valerie Lainfiesta, Lauren Langworthy, Kelsey, Light, Stefanie Lister, Jake Mauk, Mary Beth McDowell, Nicole McGhee, Caryn McKinney, Yavonka McLeod, Sarah Moore, Casey Nickalson, Keegan Norris, Mackenzie Norris, Ashley Nowell, Brandy Parabok, Dustin Pickett, Anna Powell, Curtis Reed, Amy Rogers, Matt Sances, Derek Schaap, Rebekah Smith, Alex Snell, Ally Springer, Kimberly Stewart, Serena Watson and Stephanie Wilson.
