Lady Trojans Comeback falls just short at Fuquay

The Softball team stepped outside of conference play as they traveled down highway 401 on take on Fuquay-Varina. It was a high scoring game, but unfortunately, the Lady Trojans would fall just short as they lost 7-6.

Garner got on the board first in the top of the first when Mary-Scot Powell reached base and stole second she would later score on an Ashley Carroll bunt. On the play Christie Wright also went to third and later scored on a Raven Smith bunt attempt.

After Fuquay cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third, they found their stroke as they put six on the board in the fourth, and after four innings it was 7-1 Fuquay.

But give the Lady Trojans Credit, they didn't give up as they came back with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth. With one out, Nadia Jeffries and Mary-Scott Powell both reached on Fuquay errors. Christie Wright then doubled which plated both Jeffries and Powell. Wright advanced to third and later scores on a single by Hailey Warner, that cut the lead to 7-5.

In the top of seventh, the Lady Trojans tried to complete the comeback as Mary-Scott Powell led off the inning with a single, and following a walk to Christie Wright put runners at first and second. After a ground out, the two runners advanced, and Hailey Warner laid down a sacrifice to score Powell, but that would be as close as Garner got as they fell to Fuquay dropping their record to 15-3.

JV Softball Ties Bengals

Garner got on the board early at Fuquay as they took a 3-0 lead after the first inning. But Fuquay cut the lead to one at 3-2 after the two innings of play.

After 2 more scoreless innings Garner scored one in the 5th to lead 4-2. The sixth Inning was going to be the last inning since this was a non-conference game and a time limit had been imposed. In a game full of unusual plays one Fuquay player was called out after she ran into her own batted ball and another Lady Bengal JV player was out after an illegal steal.

In the bottom of the 6th with the score 4-2 in favor of Garner and 2 outs. Fuquay had two runners on base, an “Incorrect Substitution” was declared after one play in which the Lady Bengals scored 2 runs on 4 errors by the Lady Trojans. The batter was declared out after the play and the game was declared over, ending in a tie. Garner pitcher Mary Royall enjoyed some solid defensive support, but had pitched a one hitter and not won the game.

Lady Trojans Get Senior Night Win

The Varsity Soccer team hosted East Wake on Wednesday night as they honored the Class of 2009 at halftime.

This started off well for Garner as Meagan Proper scored first in her final home at Trojan Stadium giving the Trojans a 1-0 with 28:43 to play in the first half. The one goal would hold up as the two teams went to halftime with Garner leading by one.

It turns out that the one goal would have been enough as Garner added another goal in the second half as Amber Eberhart scored to give Garner a 2-0 lead which would go to be the final score as Garner got the big Senior night win which sent the Trojan Nation home happy.

Goals: GAR: Meagan Proper, Amber Eberhart

The Varsity Baseball Team also returned home on Tuesday night when they hosted Knightdale. The Trojans were coming off a 8-6 come from behind victory over Clayton just four days prior and it became apparent very early in the game that they would avoid a hangover from the game on Friday.

Jacob Baker took the hill for the Trojans and he looked sharp as he went into the fifth inning without allowing a hit. Baker would go 5 2/3 Innings Pitched, giving up just two hits, 1 run and strikeout 11 batters.

The other story on the night was the Trojans offense. Garner started early getting two un-earned runs in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Brown and an RBI single by Pat Monahan. Garner added an RBI double in the second by Paco Martin to take a 3-1 lead.

With Garner up 5-1, they poured it on it the fifth. Pat Monahan led off the inning with a walk, followed by a Phillip Myrick triple to score Monahan. Gabe Chrismon then came to the plate and Coach Goffena put the wheels in motion as he sent Myrick toward the plate and Chrismon laid down a beautiful bunt as the Trojans suicide squeezed home the 7th Garner run of the game.

But they weren't done yet. Jackson Pleasant followed with a double to left center, which Jeremy Conyers followed with a single to right to put runners at first a third. Paco Martin then had a sacrifice fly to left to plate Pleasant and Ricky Martin tripled to left center to score Conyers and end the Garner scoring.

The Trojans held on in the 7th to take home the 9-1 win. Garner now improved to 11-8 on the season and 7-4 in the Conference with a huge match up at SSS on Friday night at 7.

The JV team spotted Knightdale a 7-0 lead at Trojan Park on Tuesday and rallied to win the game 8-7. Colin Perry provided the initial spark for the team with his 3 run-Home run to right field that was just inside the fair pole which made it 7-3.

Garner continued to chip away at the lead before coming back to tie the game when CJ Schmidt doubled and Conner Torruella singled to tie the game. Garner would win the game in the bottom of the 7th on a bases loaded walk.

Will Norris picked up the win for the Trojans in relief as he went 5 2/3 Innings of shut out baseball.

Softball Wins Again

The Lady Trojans picked up their 15th win of the season as they downed Knightdale 5-2 at Trojan Field on Tuesday night. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Lady Trojans finally busted through as Meghan Strickland singled and advanced all the way to third before being replaced on the bases by Morgan Daeke as she scored on an error, which also allowed Mary-Scott Powell to reach. The other Garner in the inning came when Christie Wright singled to plate Anna Burton

Knightdale roared back in the 5th after a hit by Paige Peterson . The next batter walks setting up an advance on a fielders choice. A wild pitch scores a run and then a Garner error allows another runner to score.

Trojans Come from Six Back to Shock Comets

LIVE WEBCAST

It was apparent early in the game that Garner would have to come from behind if they wanted to defeat Clayton. After the first two innings, the Trojans were down 6-0 on the road at Clayton. But, to the Trojans credit they never lost focus as they began to chip away at the six run deficit getting two runs in the fourth inning when Pat Monahan walked with one out. That was followed by a Phillip Myrick single. That brought up Gabe Chrismon who laced a single to right, the ball got past Bryan Forbes in right field and two runs scored.

After adding another run in the fifth, Garner's bats took a cue from the weather outside and finally heated up. With one out in the sixth, Jackson Pleasant and Jeremy Conyers had back to back singles which chased Clayton starter, Dane Hardee.

The Comets came back with Junior pitcher, Zach Seagroves who gave up an RBI double to Paco Martin which made the score 6-4 Comets. Seagroves then threw back to back wild pitches which allowed the Trojans to plate two runs and tie the game.

Going to the seventh, the score was still tied at 6 and it looked as if the Trojans would fade into the Spring evening with out a 7th inning rally, but that all changed with two outs as Phillip Myrick walked then advanced all the way to third on a pass ball putting himself in scoring position for Gabe Chrismon.

Gabe would deliver as he sent a slow rolling ground ball to third. But the throw to first could not be picked up by Matt Bunn of Clayton and all of a sudden, Garner went from being six down to up one. But, the Trojans were not done. Matt Powell was the next Trojan hitter and on his first at bat of the night, Powell smashed a ground rule double to right center field to give the Trojans a 8-6 lead.

In the bottom of the 7th, Phillip Myrick headed back out for his fifth inning of relief as he was in for Drew Gay who followed Trojan starter Jackson Pleasant.

Myrick came in and did a lights out job in relief as in the bottom of the 7th, he got the Comets to go one, two, three and send the Trojan faithful back down Highway 70 with an 8-6 win.

Garner now moves to 10-9 on the season and 6-4 in the Conference as they get set to host Knightdale on Tuesday night at 7:00 at Trojan Park

Softball Swept at West Johnston

After a thrilling 1-0 win over West Johnston last night at Trojan Field, Garner wasn't as lucky as West Johnston defeated Garner 5-0. The Lady Trojans were missing two of their starters as Christie Wright just could not seem to find a rhythm as she allowed two runs in the 3rd inning on a pass ball.
