Garner jumped on West Johnston 5-0 to begin the game on Tuesday night in the Varsity Softball match up before West Johnston came back and forced Garner to hold on for a 9-7 road win.

In the first inning, Mary-Scott Powell reached on a infield single on the first pitch of the game before Ashely Carroll drove her in for the first of her two RBI's on the night. Carroll scored two batters later on a Kimmie Stewart RBI single and Garner was off and running.

The Lady Trojans pushed across two more run in the second on a Raven Smith single and a Ashley Carroll sacrifice fly and after two it was 4-0 Garner.

With Garner leading now 5-0 on a Mary-Scott Powell RBI ground out, that's when West got on the comeback trail and scored six unanswered runs to take a one run lead in the bottom of the sixth.

In the seventh, Garner was down to their final two outs, when Maddy Stewart walked and Halie Warner singled to put two on with one out. With the bases loaded following a Meghan Strickland walk, Christina Gower for the second consecutive game had a big base hit to tie the game. Garner would go on to send nine batters to the plate and push across four runs to take a 9-6 lead heading into the final at bat for West Johnston.

West Johnston made it interesting in the last frame of the game with a run of their own to cut the lead to 9-7, then, with two outs, the Wildcats loaded the bases for Danielle Meyers who worked the count to 1-2 and struck out swinging to end the game and give Garner a season sweep over West Johnston.

Baseball Rallies to Defeat West Johnston on the Road

Garner spotted West Johnston three runs in the first inning before coming back to defeat West Johnston 6-5 in nine innings on Tuesday night.

The Trojans relied on an outstanding relief effort by Hunter Brown and Matt Powell to stay in the game while the offense began chipping away at the lead and tied the game in the top of the sixth to force extra innings.

Garner and West both had their chances to score in the seventh and eighth and ninth before the Trojans won it in the top of ninth when Matt Powell doubled, stole third with one out.

With Powell at third, he got caught in no man's land and a errant throw by the Wildcats catcher eluded the third basemen allowing Powell to score and give the Trojans a one run lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, West had their chance to score with runners at the corners, but Jared Newbry made a great defensive play to end the game and give Garner their second win in a row.

The win went to Matt Powell who gets his second win in as many games with five innings of scoreless relief.

Garner (8-9, 3-5) is back at home on Friday night at 7:00 when they host Clayton at Trojan Park.
