Powell's Pitching Performance Keeps Garner in Playoff Hunt

The Varsity Baseball team came into play Tuesday night with their backs against the wall as they needed to go four and one over their final five games to have a legitimate shot at making the playoffs. Garner took the first step toward achieving that goal on Tuesday night with at 8-1 road win over Knightdale.

Garner scored a pair of runs in the first inning with CJ Schmitt singled home Jesse Fisher for his 20th RBI of the season a couple of pitches later, Alec Hulmes scored on a wild pitch and after a half inning, Garner was up 2-0.

That was plenty of run support for Trojan starter Matt Powell who on Tuesday night was, dominant as he yielded just one un-earned run in a complete game effort.

With Powell dealing on the mound, the Garner offense came through, already leading 4-1, the Trojans put four runs on the board in the fifth inning thanks to some Knightdale miscues and after five Garner was up 8-1.

Matt Powell finished out the game going all seven innings allowing just two hits and striking out 10 Knights as Garner (9-11, 4-6) went on to down Knightdale (11-8, 5-6) by a 8-1 final score.

The Trojans are back in action on Thursday night when they travel to Smithfield-Selma for a 7:00 first pitch.

The Varsity Softball team continued their winning ways on Tuesday night as they defeated Knightdale 3-1.

The Knights, coached by former Trojan, Adam Hamrick held a 1-0 lead through the first four innings, but Garner found their stride as Christina Gower did it all for the Trojans on Tuesday. Not only did she win the game in the circle, she also belted a home run en route to the 3-1 win for the Lady Trojans.

Garner is back in action at home on Friday night at 6:00 when they host Smithfield-Selma.
