Softball Falls in First Round of Playoffs

WEB CAST.

Garner couldn't muster any offense on Tuesday night in round one of the State Playoffs as they fell to Wilmington Ashley 1-0 at Trojan Fied.

Ashley scored the loan run of the game in the top of the second off tough luck loser Christina Gower. With one out, Crystal Kliendinst singled and with two outs, Ashley put a pair of runners on base for their lead off hitter Annie Galizio who singled just over the leaping try of Meghan Strickland to plate the Eagles run.

Garner had their best scoring chance in the bottom of the fifth when Kimmie Stewart doubled for her second hit of the night to lead off the inning, however, Garner couldn't push her home as Maddy Stewart flew out to left and Halie Warner struck out trying to lay down a bunt, then Meghan Strickland sent a groundball deep in the hole at short that was fieled by the short stop Ashley Altman and she fired to first in time to get Strickland by half a step to retire Garner.

Neither team could muster any more offense on the night as Garner ends their season as co-champions of the Greater Neuse River Conference and a 17-4 record.

Baseball Falls to Hoggard in the First Round of Playoffs

WEB CAST.

Garner had many chances to score on Friday night but, just couldn't get that timely hit as they fell in the first round of the State Playoffs on Friday at Hoggard High School 5-2.

The Vikings came in to the game ranked as the top team in the State and showed it on Friday night as they pounded out eight hits but the Trojans held their own.

Through the first four innings, Garner had four hits and had left four runners on base and was only down 1-0 as Hoggard got a run in the third on a Scott Coleman single. The Vikings expanded their lead to 3-0 after four with a pair of un-earned runs to chase Garner starter Jacob Baker from the game, but to Baker's credit, he pitched a outstanding game yielding just one earned run in his three and a third innings of work.

With Hoggard leading 5-0 in the sixth, Garner finally found their offense with two outs and a runner on first, Jared Newbry singled as did Colin Perry to load the bases. Then, on a one ball count, Connor Torruella delivered another BIG base hit as the lined a two-run double to left field to plate two Trojan runs.

That sent Hoggard into their bullpen to get Joseph O'Donnell who allowed Garner to get back into the game and bring the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but it just wasn't the Trojans night as they fell to Hoggard 5-2.

For Garner, the season ends with a 13-12 record and the Trojans can look back at their outstanding run in the second half of the season to make the playoffs and the Trojans thank their seniors for their dedication to the program.

Softball Falls to Harnett Central

WEB CAST.

It was a long night for the Varsity Softball team as they could not solve the Mary-Katherine Pengram puzzel as she and her Harnett Central teammates defeated Garner in a game that played to decide the top seed in the Greater Neuse River Conference.

Harnett Central scored a pair of un-earned runs in the top of the first, which would be a common theme for the Lady Trojans on Wednesday night. But, Garner came right back in the bottom of the first as with one out, Raven Smith was hit by a pitch and scored one batter later as Ashley Carroll lined a double to the gap in left center to plate the loan Garner run of the night.

After the first Harnett Central exploded for five runs in the fifth and Garner couldn't recover as Harnett Central pounded out 11 hits and five Garner errors aided the Harnett Central cause as they went on to defeat Garner 10-1 at West Johnston.

Garner (17-3) will share the conference crown with Harnett Central and the Lady Trojans finish the season as the number two seed in the Conference when the State Playoffs begin at home next Tuesday.

Softball Forces One Game Playoff with Win over Central; Baseball Rallies Late

WEB CAST.

The Varsity Softball team had just one conference loss coming into play Tuesday night and needed a win over Harnett Central to force a one game playoff tomorrow night to decide the number one seed in the State Playoffs next week. Garner did just that as they found a way to pull out a 4-3 win on Senior Night.

Each team left runners in scoring position in the first two innings and Garner finally struck first with three runs in the third. With two outs, Garner just had a runner picked off third base for the second out of the inning. That's when, with two on base, Kimmie Stewart laced a two-run double to left center to break the scoreless tie. After a Maddy Stewart single, Halie Warner lined a single back up the box to plate to score a run and give Garner a 3-0 lead.

Harnett Central rallied to score three runs in the top of the fifth to tie the score at three all. But, it didn't take the Lady Trojans long to respond as they came back with a run in the bottom half.

With one out, Kimmie Stewart was hit by the pitch and after being lifted for a courtesy runner, Maddy Stewart singled and after a two-out walk to Meghan Strickland loaded the bases, Freshman pitcher, Christina Gower looped a single over the first basemen's head to score courtesy runner, Shea Barbour and give Garner a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Harnett Central got the tying run to second base, but back to back fly outs to left, gave Garner a 4-3 win.

With the win, Garner will play Harnett Central on Wednesday night at 7:00, the game will be played AT WEST JOHNSTON! With the winner getting the number one seed in the playoffs.

Baseball Rallies on Senior Night

The Varsity Baseball team fell behind 6-0 to Harnett Central on Tuesday night before coming all the way back to win in the bottom of the seventh.

The Trojans got the game winning hit from Will Norris who came in as a defensive replacement in the middle of the contest. With the RBI single from Norris, Garner came all the way back for a 7-6 win.

With that win, Garner ties for fourth place in the conference, however, due to the tiebreaker, Garner will be the number five seed for the State Playoffs which begin Friday night at Hoggard at 7:00.

Trojans Clinch Playoff Spot

WEB CAST.

Garner came into play Friday night needing to defeat East Wake on their senior night to make the State Playoffs and the Trojans did just that in a big way with seven runs in the first inning en route to a 14-4 win over East Wake.

The first four Trojan hitters reached base and eight of the first nine got on base safely as Garner chased Warrior starter Eric Hardin from the game after just 1/3 of an inning of work. There were a couple of big hits in the inning as Garner got a RBI double from CJ Schmitt and a two run double down the left field line from Jackson Pleasant.

The score remained 7-0 until the second inning off Garner starter, Jacob Baker who pitched an outstanding game for 4 2/3 innings. But, the Warriors struck for a pair off Baker in the third to make it 7-2 after three.

Garner scored a single run in the fifth when Jackson Pleasant collected his third RBI of the game as he drove in Connor Torruella to make it 8-2 Trojans.

The Warriors chased Baker from the game in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs thanks to RBI singles Wes Luck and Garrett Johnson and all of a sudden it was a game again at 8-4 going to sixth.

It didn't take the Trojans long to respond as they came right back with three runs in the sixth as CJ Schmitt drove home a pair of runs on a two-run Home Run that towered over the light pole in left field. A couple batters later, Colin Perry got his second RBI of the game as he drove Jared Newbry home and after six complete, Garner had a 11-4 advantage.

The very next inning, Garner put the capper on the night as CJ Schmitt belted his second home run of the night, this one, a three-run shot also to left field put the dagger in the Warriors heart and Garner came away with a 14-4 win.

Garner (12-11, 7-6), has clinched a playoff spot for yet another season and will close the regular season at home on Senior Night when they host Harnett Central at 7:00.

The Outer Loop Sports Show Returns to the Air!

This week, the guys talk some golf, tennis and even Lacrosse, but mostly talk Baseball and the playoff picture in both the Greater Neuse and the Tri-9 Conferences.

Softball Downs Imps

WEB CAST.

The Lady Trojans stepped out of GNRC play on Wednesday night as they hosted long time rival the Cary Imps at Trojan Field.

Garner started fast in the opening inning when, with two outs, Ashley Carroll lined a double off the center field wall and one batter later, Kasey Hamrick picked up a single to drive home Carroll and give Garner a 1-0 lead.

In the very next inning, the Lady Trojans struck again as Kimmie Stewart began the frame with a double to left, two batters later, Halie Warner joined the hit parade as she lined a single back up the box to plate Stewart and give Garner a 3-0 lead.

The Lady Trojans weren't done yet as the very next hitter, Meghan Strickland just missed a home run as she hit the first pitch she saw off the bottom of the left field wall to plate Warner and capped the Garner scoring in the second.

Garner began to sub and put people in position for what could come next year and for the most part, Garner was solid in the field, with the constant being the outstanding performance in the circle by true Freshman Christina Gower who walked just one and struck out eight in a complete game effort to pick up her 15th win of the year.

However, Cary made things interesting in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs an a RBI single from Katie Long and a wild pitch from Gower to plate the two runs. The Lady Trojans came storming right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to RBI singles from Christina Gower and Anna Burton to give Garner a 6-2 lead.

That would be more than enough for Gower as Garner improved to 15-2 on the season and will return to action on Friday night at 7 when they travel to East Wake.

Garner started hot in the opening frame when CJ Shmitt hit a solo home run to dead center and Garner was up 1-0. The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the first off Trojan starter, Jackson Pleasant as the Bulldogs got a single run to tie the score.

It would remain 1-1 until the sixth inning when Garner pushed across the winning runs with Jesse Fisher and Colin Perry on base, Trojan second basemen, Connor Torruella laced a two-run double to left center to give Garner a two run lead.

Matt Powell picked up the win in relief as he pitched for scoreless innings to strike out nine Bulldogs and keep Garner alive heading into a BIG Friday night show down at East Wake.
