Trojans Blast Athens to Open Season

WEB CAST .

After winning the conference last season and going to the sectional finals, Coach Gray and the Varsity Boys Basketball squad picked up right where they left off last season as they built a 12 point lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they opened up the season with a 78-41 thumping of Athens Drive.

Garner (1-0) were without the services of Gavin Wilson and DeAnthony Harris due to the football season still going on, but it didn't matter to the Trojans as Donald Johnson poured in nine first quarter points while the Garner defense made it tough for the Jaguars on the offensive end and it was 20-8 in favor of the Trojans after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Athens (0-1) fell deeper in a whole as Garner went to their full court press and caused 16 first half turnovers, as the Jaguars scored just six points in the second stanza.

Offensively, Garner was hitting on all cylinders as they used great play for their senior point guard, Emmanuel McClain, en route to a 37-14 halftime lead.

The second half was more of the same as every player saw action for Garner on Monday night. In the second half, Garner was led by Larry Richardson, Cameron Redd and Dominique Reed. All who poured in great efforts down low for the Trojans.

Overall it was a successful debut for the Trojans as they downed their former conference foe, 78-41.

Garner is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Southern Durham to take on Riverside High School, tip time is set for 2:30.

Varsity Girls Struggle in Season Opener

It was a tough night for Coach Mays and his squad, as they hung tough for the first half and kept fighting in the second half, but Athens was too much as they defeated the Lady Trojans on Monday night, 49-32.

Garner (0-1) did a great job of hanging with the Jaguars, and after the season opening loss they will also be in action Saturday at Southern Durham. Tip is set for 4:00
