Garner used a three run first inning and Danny Shortt earned his first career varsity baseball win as the Trojans broke a two-game losing skid to Middle Creek with at 5-3 win at Trojan Park on Wednesday.

For the second game in a row, Garner (1-1) had a chance to put up a couple of early runs and after missing that opportunity on Tuesday, the Trojans capitalized on Wednesday. Brandon Tant singled to begin the inning and with two outs and Tant standing at third after the first of six Mustang errors of the day for CJ Schmidt who delivered his first double and RBI of the young campaign.

Will Norris reached on the second error of the inning and brought Schmidt home and Norris was singled home by Taylor Stephens - which led to a three run inning and a 3-0 Trojan lead.

Shortt (W 1-0) who transferred in from Southeast Raleigh prior to the season pitched his way out of trouble in the second. Middle Creek (0-2) loaded the bases on a Garner error, single and a walk. However, Shortt came back and struck out the side to preserve the three run lead.

The Trojans added some insurance in the fourth inning of Middle Creek starter, Corey Walker (L 0-1). Stephens began the inning with a single to left and was bunted over to second. Brett Walters reached on an error which was followed by a sacrifice fly from Brett Bailey to give Garner a 4-0 lead. Tant followed with his second double of the year to plate Walters and close the scoring in the inning with the men of Troy up 5-0.

Middle Creek tried to mount a comeback with a pair of runs in the sixth on back to back doubles from Will Fuller and Bobby MacNaugton to pull to within three at 5-2 as Shorrt left the game and Alec Hulmes came in to finish the inning.

Hulmes (S 1) continued to pitch into the seventh where he allowed a two-out solo home run to Seth Watkins, however the Mustang would get no closer as Garner defeated Middle Creek 5-3.

The Trojans return to action tomorrow afternoon at 4:15 when the hit the road for the first time this season. Garner will travel to Broughton for a rematch with the Caps.
