Pierce Jensen doubled home Brandon Saunders in the top of the sixth to give Broughton a 2-1 lead they wouldn't give up as they defeated the Garner Trojans 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Trojan Park.

Garner (0-1) took an early lead in their first at bat as Brandon Tant singled and scored on an Alec Hulmes single to give the Trojan an early 1-0 advantage, however Garner would strand runners and second and third in the first.

The score remained 1-0 until the top half of the fourth inning when Broughton (1-0) got on the board and evened the score. With two outs and the bases clear, Will Cooper came to the plate and on a 2-0 count, Garner pitcher, Will Norris left a breaking ball up in the zone that Cooper hammered over the left centerfield wall for a solo home run.

With the score knotted at one all for the next two innings, the Caps finally pushed across an unearned run against Norris, who had pitched a great game all afternoon. With one out, Saunders reached when Hulmes had his foot come off the bag while trying to pick a low through.

Following the error, and a strikeout of Payne Eller, Norris looked to be out of the game with a two strike count on Jenson. However, Jenson found a gap in left-centerfield scoring Saunders and giving Broughton a 2-1 lead. Hulmes then came on to pitch the final inning and 1/3 keeping the Trojans down by only a single run.

Garner was down to their final at bat and following a one out single by Brett Walters, the Trojans had the winning run at the plate. But, Brett Bailey flew out to right and Brandon Tant flew out to left to end the game and send the Trojans to their first loss of the season.

Garner is back at home tomorrow at 4:00 when they host the Middle Creek Mustangs at Trojan Park.
