Varsity Soccer Update

Last Week:

Game 1: Garner played at Wake Forest-Rolesville. We were very organized defensively, only allowing 1 goal the entire game. The Cougar goal keeper made 7 saves in order to keep the Trojans scoreless. We played well as a team, moving the ball quickly, maintaining possession, and creating scoring opportunities.

Game 2: Home against Cary. Lost 4-0.

This week:

Game 3: Home against Wilson Fike. The Trojans started off slow allowing a goal in the first 15 minutes, but after adjustments were made, the game got exciting. The rest of the first half was back and forth when Amber Eberhard played the ball into the middle where Heather Wilfong got into position to tie the game up. The second half belonged to Garner. With possession time advantage going to Garner, so did scoring opportunities. The Wilson Fike keeper was able to make 3 breakaway saves in order to keep the game tied at 1 -1. The Garner defense played extremely well keeping the ball on the Fike side for most of the second half. The game ended with a back and forth frenzy only to leave both sides wondering what could have happened if overtime could be played.

Game 4: Away against Cary. In a rainy atmosphere, the Trojans took on the Mustangs of Middle Creek. With the field being wet, the game was a little sloppy. Two yellow cards were issued out, one for each team. Garner took a first half lead of 1-0 when Gabi Dugal played a diagonal through pass to Eberhard who found herself one on one with the goal keeper. Eberhard faked the goal keep left and went around her to the right to make a tap in goal. The second half brought on more rain and worse field conditions. As puddles emerged throughout the field, the players kept on. Middle Creek tied the game with a shot from 18 yards out that went into the left side netting midway through the second half. Garner responded shortly after when sophomore Micaela Kymer played a free kick into the penalty box. Taylor King got the first touch on it, but it was Heather Wilfong who got the golden touch to put Garner ahead 2-1. After numerous saves by goalkeeper Francheska Keke, Garner was able to withstand the Middle Creek pressure to win 2-1.
