Trojans homer past Spartans

Garner bombed four home runs as a club including two solo shots from Brett Walters as they scored six runs in the top of the fourth as they snapped a five-game road losing streak with a 10-4 win over Smithfield-Selma on Friday night.

Garner (9-11, 7-4) started the scoring in the second inning as Walters led off the inning with his first home run of the night to left center. After a walk to Brett Bailey, Brighton Hudson collected his third varsity RBI with a single to left and after an inning and a half, it was 2-0 Trojans.

The Trojans added to their lead in the third off Ben Youngblood (L, 3-4). Brandon Tant doubled to begin the frame. Connor Torruella followed with a hustle double to center which put runners at second and third with no outs ahead of Alec Hulmes who golfed the first pitch he saw to right field for a sacrifice fly and a 3-0 Garner lead. The lead became four runs as Taylor Stephens doubled to bring Torruella home with a 4-0 lead for the visitors.

SSS (8-12, 3-7) cut into the lead in the bottom of the third off Danny Shortt (W, 3-3). Alex Sellers singled to begin the inning and was moved to third on a fielder's choice. TJ Brown followed with a single to score Sellers. After a walk to Tyler Castleburry, Dylan Homick beat out a play at first as the ball rolled away from the Trojan defense and allowed two runs to score and after three innings, it was 4-3 Trojans.

In the fourth, Garner busted the game wide open with six runs. After back to back singles, the Trojans had runners at first and second with one out ahead of Tant who blasted a three run shot to right center and a 7-3 Trojan lead.

After a ground out, Alec Hulmes hit his third home run in as many games and fifth of the year, a solo shot to left. Not to be outdone, Walters decided to drop his second bomb of the game giving the Trojans their first back to back homers of the year. Garner would add another run in the inning and after four, it was 10-3 Trojans.

SSS got a run in the bottom of the seventh but it did no harm as Garner blasted the Spartans 10-4.

Garner is back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Southeast Raleigh at Trojan Park, first pitch is set for 4:00.

For the first time in two games, Garner did not have to play extra innings to dispose of Smithfield-Selma as they blasted the Spartans 14-1.

The Lady Trojans took a 4-1 lead after two and never looked back.

Garner is back at home on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 when they host Southeast Raleigh.
